Ms. Holt is already getting (at minimum) Medicaid for 10 medications, funding to supplement housing, per the article. Now this article wants the reader to feel sorry for her that she cannot be more accepted for having a disease that was most likely contracted through her high risk lifestyle (heroin addict).

I'm glad the south does not accept and does not pour more funding into these programs that address problems that people's poor life choices create.

Wake up people. One of the reasons taxes are much lower in southern states (no state income tax and real estate taxes 1/3 of what I paid in IL, for example) is that there is much lower funding for the welfare state.

"We are not just fighting HIV, we are fighting a culture," Ogle said. "What is disturbing is that we have women who don't feel comfortable insisting that men use condoms because they are afraid he will leave and maybe he is paying some bills. They are victims of poor education, low self-esteem and they don't feel empowered."

-- That was the most disturbing paragraph I've read in a while. Women put themselves at risk of infectious and potentially deadly diseases because they are afraid their "man" will leave if they insist he wear a condom.

"She eventually qualified for Medicaid, which pays for the 10 medications she takes every day. And she receives a disability check that helps cover the rent for her sparsely furnished apartment, tucked away on the backside of a public housing complex."

So what is the problem? Sounds like she got her share of my tax dollars. Just keep giving the money away so that people bear no responsilbility for their behavior of practicing unsafe sex or having a HEROIN ADDICTION.

It sounds like this woman is getting all the aid that she needs, she shouldn't be living in style while she's living on the public dime.

And, if you say: "Well, it isn't her fault" the counter would be that Yes, it is totally her fault. Her party and unhealthy lifestyle got her to this place.

I guess I feel sorry for the taxpayers that have to support her.

Why are some people shamed into accountability for their health problems while some are accepted? They have made smokers parihas, but alcoholics and drug abusers have a 'disease', at least here in the 'North'. Either way, people need to take responsibility for the health problems that have contracted due to their own behavior. We worry about how much money it takes to deal with smoking related illnesses, but unprotected sex and IV drug abuse isn't getting the heavy government handed laws because it would offend a certain population. Essentially, they go after the easy targets.

As far this individual, what has she contributed to society at all? Former IV drug abuser? She's disappointed that she won't get her free housing, free food, and free drugs. I'm sorry, but these are the folks that are dragging the rest of us down. I wouldn't wish any illness on anyone regardless of their contribution, but I was always taught that you get out of things what you put in. Unfortunately, those who put in the most get the least while others leech on and give nothing back.

All the folks that will call me a 'racist homophobe' shouldn't bother. I won't be reading any of your nasty conservative hater comments.

let's see if I have this right:
A person has unprotected sex with someone who does not know the health history of the person with whom they are copulating; contracts a disease that has had more than adequate publicity in the last 25 years as to cause and effect;
expects to be provided for with housing, food, and medical care for free;
and anticipates I'll feel sorry for them.
Am I the only one that thinks something is wrong here.

The issue is who should pay this cost.

The people who have brought the problem on themselves.

Or, the people that have lived responsibly

Part of the benefit of STIGMA is that it serves as the best PREVENTION.

In Newark, they over-tax good citizens so that they can support the reckless.

How many RECKLESS people are receiving the benefits (rent, food and housing subsidies) of hard working people, because they CHOSE a sick lifestyle like drugs abuse and sex with people engaged in the homosexaul lifestyle?

Now that homosexuality has spilled its filth into the heterosexual community, we are starting to see this disease spread to promiscuous straights as well.

But lets let anyone and their dog get married, use tax dollars so that Mary can become Bobby, and Mark can get the female breasts he always wanted, and spend until we are all broke.

If you oppose these reprobates, you are called heartless, and intolerant.

Well people better wise up, because there's a day coming real soon where we won't have the money to be anything but BANKRUPT.

...spending $45 million over five years on television and radio ads, transit signs and other efforts to promote education and prevention

How about spending $10 million to let people know that if they contract AIDS from this day forward, they will not get one red cent of taxpayer money to deal with the bad decisions that they alone made.

If they haven't gotten it by now they never will.
The lesson that they are geting now is that when they mess up the stupid taxpayers wll be forced by the socialists to pay their way.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for this wothless junkie whose immoral and irresponsible behavior made her sick. Well I don't. I think this walking disaster should be exterminated before she spreads her illness to others.
Finally...something to like about the South.

Oh to be able to feel so sorry for the criminals who use illegal drugs and now complain. Seems to me one should accept the consequences of ones behavior. To the extent one does not to live those consequences perhaps one should not engage in the illegal activity. But of course it's never the fault of the criminal engaging in the criminal behavior.

Can't we petition France to take back most of the Louisiana purchase, Spain - Florida, Mexico - S/E-Texas and simply shove Mississippi and Alabama into the Gulf of Mexico/out to sea?
These...'states' haven't contributed anything to the Union but poverty, hate, ignorance and disease, and they're very expensive to the civilized north. It's well past time to cut 'em loose.
The South and Southerners - sheesh. We'd be far better off without 'em/should have let 'em make their Confederacy and have been done with 'em back in 1861 - they've been a drain ever since!
Funny, this is an article of someone who brought their "ignorance, poverty and disease" from Newark, NJ (the north) down to the south.

Try again.

Listen, I've been all over the world, and every country has its share of ignorant people. Heck, right here in Illinois, I run across rednecks every single day!

You think slavery was only confined to the southern states? Hardly. It was just more prevalent there.

Not everyone from the southern United States is a hater or a racist. Just like not everyone else from the north embraces diversity. Some of the most violent race wars occurred right here in Chicago and in Boston.

The civil war was about state's rights vs. federalism. To this day, our country constantly tests the rights of states against the rights of the federal government.(The first issue that comes to mind is gay marriage). I will agree with you on one point; it probably would have been better for the US to have been broken into smaller territories. As it stands now, I think it is just too big to manage.

Bigotry and ignorance are alive and well in all parts of the United States, unfortunately.

Black American's being trained through their religion to disrespect their own people. Black American's need to wake up and staop accepting whatever they are told to accept.

A lack of education and knowledge of modern diseases is important.

Understanding people is also more important than knowing the bible, especially if the bible is used to hurt people, like the lady in thsi story by her own family trained to disrespect her for her choices she made.

I guess dfamily is not all it is said to be.

I am glad I am an orphan if this is how family treats one another, which has been my experience of observation of families.

There are countries that share your attitude on public health, and every one of them is a paradise.

We should be more like South Africa, Gambia and Malawi.
