Editorial: When suicide becomes newsworthy
When should a suicide be front page news? Most people would say never, and we would usually agree.

First, the death of Donald Riggan is tragic. That, is foremost. Suicide is a sensitive subject, rife with emotional charge, and the news seldom reports it - there is simply little "news" regarding the taking of one's life, it tends to be straightforward even if the "why" is never disclosed. This suicide was deemed by the POLICE as exceptional, with "unusual" circumstances and the POLICE classified it as a potential homicide. The newspaper reported the information given, they did not amplify or define, they simply reported. To iply that there was agenda on the part of the paper, is errant- it is perception through an emotional filter. Those who took exception to the reporting of the news supplied by Police, I ask: should the news keep such information silent? How outrageous would it be to later find that this young man's death was, in fact, determined to be murder- the news had earlier information suggesting that possibility & yet chose to keep it from the public? As a reader and community member, someone who parties involved and affected, the newspaper reporting the information given is not what caused hurt nor did it compound the sense of loss. With that being said, I do not condemn the Henderson Police either...the responding officer made a judgement. It is quite easy to pass judgement on the news, on the officer...but it is a scenario that I dare say none of us would want to have under our job descriptions. The suicide of Donald Riggan was tragic, the reporting of the Police's perspective to the community was not.
