Grandma, put on your bifocals, I had written " a weeks worth". Meaning 1 weeks worth. My house is smelling like roses, and my neighbors are happy to have a neighbor us. Thank you for your concern.
My point on the recyclables was that I would rather see a person/persons/family turn in the recylces to feed their family than give it to the city. If it goes to put food in their childrens stomaches, than I'm good with that. Times are hard. I would rather see this than someone turn to crime to feed their family.
That's all I was getting at :).
Most likely not going thru trash to feed their kids--more likely to feed their own drug habit.

Yes. I have my little setup going, which includes for your information: a small color tv with working remote, a 70's style tv tray with a happy looking turkey on it who happens to also be wearing a pilgrim style hat, a foot stool (pun intended) which I can rest my callused white feet on, and of course a big plate of spicy chicken wings that I purchased at the Walmart Super Center.... I don't need to leave this position until my very last recorded tv show is finished (American Idol in case you were wondering).
SWEET setup! Very similar to my own. But I have a cooler full of Bud Light handy!

WHO CARES?!? Shred anything important, that's common sense. If they wake you up, I bet if you asked them nicely or (like I did) left a huge visible FRIENDLY note saying I'd like to sleep on my only day off to clean up afterwards and no noise. I haven't had an issue since. I wish my problems were so minute I'd whine about someone taking crap I don't want anymore, keeping it out of landfills, or spending the few bucks they do make on local businesses in town anyways. Wah Wah

Would you prefer scavenging versus robbing people at gunpoint? No matter what even in a picture perfect town there's drug addicts. They're gonna get money one way or another. I know I'd rather them take my junk than steal my wallet or purse. Wouldn't you? Stopping scavengers won't prevent drug addiction unfortunately.

Why don't you chase them away if you are sick and tired of looking out your window at them at 5:30 in the morning.
Probably because in Commiefornia it's illegal for a peaceful, law-abiding citizen to go outside their home with a firearm in order to confront someone who's messing with their property. You're as phony as your phony, steroids-pumped namesake! Duh!

I have yelled at them. My husband has yelled at them but they are there with their flashlights every trash day!!! They act like its their right to dig through my trash. Someone told us it is not against the law if the trash is at the curb, does anyone know that for sure? I guess we just wait until they use the info they found to make unauthorized purchases. Has anyone had to go through an ID theft investigation? It is time consuming and they act like you are the thief!!!
What, exactly, do they seem to be looking for? Glass? Plastic bottles? Metal cans?

By the way: This past week, on at least three occasions in the morning I've seen an hispanic guy, his car parked on the shoulder, holding a plastic bag and apparently looking for something along Gilman Springs Road. Anyone know what he might be looking for? I have to think there would not be many recyclable beverage containers there.

Harbor freight has little battery operated window alarms. They are basically a piezo and magnetic switch, you can double side tape them to the can and lid. The unsuspecting scavenger will open the lid and get a dose of the alarm. They are cheap, like 2 or 3 dollars, so it isn't some big deal if they are vandalized or lost when the trash is collected. Since it seems you get up early enough to witness them in your trash anyways, it may be fun to watch them jump.

I can not believe you all have gotten so complacent you think looking through your trash is OK? That it is better than robbing you.

I am sorry IT is NOT alright for people to be IN your neighborhood going thru your trash, no matter what they are looking for.

Most are drug addicts. IT is NOT like you see some little old lady rifling thru your trash cause her SS is not enough, so she has to supplement it!!

We used to have a scavenger coming around here, but we neighbors took care of him. Some hosed him down, some threw eggs at him, and some threw rotten tomatoes. They got the idea, so no problem for years now.

What started out as collecting aluminum cans has now turned into idenity theft and worse.
You should NEVER leave anything in your trash that can cause you trouble- name, account info, credit card number, etc. It was NEVER safe to do so.

Personally, I see to it that no one can read any info in my trash- black marker, and, shred all identity info.

Even, so, I did have an identity theft. A check was used at a big-box store to pay for a TV. But, I filed suit against the store, and, their collection agency, and, they paid $1000, plus attorney fees. Will that stop them? Not likely. But, it will make them use more caution about whose check they cash.
Bright side anyone

Thanks for the post. I hadn't really thought about it this way. I'm gonna make sure my stuff is shredded fine before it hits the trash.

I hope it never gets to this point here in the Phoenix Metro area where looking for cans and plastic bottles becomes illegal in the trash. But then again no one so far has gone through the trash in residential areas except apartment complexes.Since people here are litter bugs, I am able to find cans and plastic bottles on the side of the road with no problem.

To those of you that are complaining about the trash scavengers, just remember this, what goes around comes around in life. In these uncertain times, you could possibly find yourself out on the streets with no prospect of getting a job. May life treat you with the same kindness that you have dished out to others when things was good for you.

Yep, once that Trash Can hits the Street it and, the Contents become fair game. your Tactics are a lil over the top Homer but, DAMN I wish I could've seen that it must have been funnier than hell. At least you got a good Laugh outta it.
Minnie dear nowadays you pretty much have to Shred everything with any Personal Info befor Trashing it.
Thing is that, your going to get charged for pick up weather you put the Cans at the Curb or, not. I pay Seprately from my Water Bill which, wasn't the Case befor moveing to this Area. I think if your paying seprately from your Water Bill you can cancel your Trash pick up Service and, opt for takeing your Garbage to the Dump yourself can't you?
Not an enjoyable Errand but, if I were that concerned about it I might do it.
