There was a car accident on Florida, across the street from Red Robin. My friends and I figured that someone had been run over, seeing that atleast 10 firefighters were on the ground looking underneath the car. At the scene there was 10 police cars, 4 fire trucks, and 2 ambulences. Does anyone know what actually happened?

Coroner's officials have identified a 64-year-old man who died Wednesday after being hit by a car in Hemet.

John Thomas O'Connell, of Hemet, was crossing West Florida Avenue near Gilmore Street about 4:30 p.m. when a Ford Taurus struck him, a Riverside County coroner's news release said.

The car was traveling about 30 mph and O'Connell was dragged underneath, a police news release said. Firefighters had to lift the vehicle off of him.

O'Connell died about 5:30 p.m. at Hemet Valley Medical Center.

Sad indeed, for both the pedestrian and possibly the driver of the Taurus as well. This area of Florida Ave. has few crosswalks and jaywalking is a persistent issue for drivers here, especially at night. A few weeks ago I was nearly rear-ended around this location because a car in front of me stopped suddenly for a jaywalker.

You have to be kidding? And not funny at all. A 64 year old man is killed being dragged under a car and all you can think of is a john meeting a hooker? Believe it or not, there are valuable people living doing worthwhile things in Hemet, CA, and John Thomas O'Connell was probably one of them. Shame on you "Happy".

Both the driver and the deceased are victims. The families of both are hurting. Why it happened is not as important right now as upholding those involved. The facts of the incident will be investigated in due time. If "J" walking was a part of the cause, help get the word out to discourage people from doing this. It might save lives. Please pray for all involved.

This sweet man who got ran over, I called him Jim, was a homeless man who lived in Valle Vista. I saw him just about everyday and often gave him money, he never asked anyone for anything, he never bought alcohol or drugs was very quiet and polite. He was I think mentally ill, as I would occasionally see him in deep conveesation with himself, he must have been distracted when he stepped out in front of the car. I will miss seeing him, he was a dear sweet man and would be so humble and thankful for anything, he would go and eat with the money that people gave him. Jim had quite loyal group of us out here in VV. I feel so sad as Im sure all of his other friends feel, I think we all felt like we were looking out for him together and we all wanted to, he just got you, he did not try to but there he is in all of our hearts, sweet Jim aka John.

Holly Spirit Catholic Church is supposed to have a service for him. But ever time I call them they say that the service is still pending. I think he has 2 nieces trying to deal with veterans affairs. So maybe that is the hold up? If anyone finds out more about the service time and date please let me know. Thanks so much.

Actually he was a war vet, who was homeless. due to mental problems caused from war. Very nice guy, who was also very smart. Though you would never know, unless you spoke with him. He will be missed, rest in peace.
