Five kids 14 - 5 years old, were all hit by a car driving by. There wad no crossly available, no stop sign or light at the corner where the kids were crossing. One car stopped, a second did not.

2 of the kids are in induced coma's, one needed surgery, one has a broken ankle and all suffered concussions, massive scrapes and bruises.

Is the city negligent for not having some sort of crosswalk or light at the parks corner intersection? FYI, it was LEGAL for the children to cross the 40 MPH street at the location in which they crossed.

The children hit by the car are my cousins kids. Two are now home, but three are still in the hospital...two in induced coma's.

Unfortunately, the closest crosswalk to the park was 1/4 mile away in the opposite direction from where they were headed.

The best news is that they are all alive and that we won't be attending any funerals this week. Praise Jesus!

Other families are not so lucky. Please keep the Rossman family from Florida in your prayers...they lost one of their triplet daughters, Delaney, when she and one of her sisters were struck by a car last week. She was buried Friday.:)

Thank you very much!

Yeah, my cousin and the surrounding neighbors are working on getting a stoplight at that location. The kids crossed the road legally from a corner, but with a 40 MPH speed limit, it is still just too dangerous...obviously.

I see children and adults always running across Kirby by Mary Henley Park.

There needs to be two crosswalks ... one at the start of the park on Kirby and one at the end of the park on Kirby.

But still yet your heart has to go out for a whole family injured. I hope they all are better and home soon!

From what I seen on the news, the driver was an 85 year old woman. Just from my expierence from living in Hemet a few years, old people should not drive. Your eyesight worsens and your reaction time slows greatly with age. And when I mean old, I mean 80+
The kids WERE on a crosswalk.
NO there is NO crosswalk were they crossed. Get your facts straight before you open mouth. Why would a driver stop at an intersection @ a cross street that was wrong , maybe the 89 year old thought the car was turning right? I would have!

Hey, bitch, the news report linked to this story said there was a crosswalk. Don't get so angry. Not my fault you live in the shitty part of town with no lights or crosswalks.
maybe the 14 year old should of stopped when they walked past the first stopped car and made sure the road was clear before they continued to jaywalk instead of running through the street like a couple of beaners running through the desert with border patrol on their tail?
And 80+ is too old to drive. Call Dial-a-Ride, call a cab, get an electric scooter, I dont give a shit. But don't drive before you kill someone.
The children crossed the street legally. They had the right of way. It was an accident.

Please don't go blaming my cousins daughter for what happened. She is a great kid who followed the law and was just trying to entertain her younger brothers and cousin with a trip to the park. She is only 14. She is not responsible for the driver who did not stop!

The children are not "beaners", they are Caucasian and Native American (as if that detail matters.)

As long as the woman is not found to have been doing something to distract her from driving, she should not be found guilty of a crime, she should, however, be found responsible for the accident. Because the children were crossing the street LEGALLY, she is at fault.

I think the city hikes some blame as well, for not ensuring a safe way for people to cross the street at that location. And a 40 MPH is way to fast in front of a park with no fences. 25-30 MPH is more suitable for that location. The city needs to add a light at either end of the park and lower the speed limit.

I disagree that just because someone hits a particular age, that that means they are no longer qualified to drive. That is what the drivers test is for. But I think that after a certain age, they should be tested at least every other year (both written and behind the wheel).

UPDATE: One child is still in coma, but showing signs of conscienceness, two are still in hospital in serious condition but recovering, two are home with broken bones and severe bruising. Pray for speedy recovery for all.

Praise to God that all the children will survive and that we are not attending a funeral. That is the best news of all!!

If there isn't a crosswalk, they are not crossing the street legally. try and wrap that around your brain.
It IS LEGAL to cross the street when you are coming FROM a corner or going TO a corner. There does not HAVE to be a crosswalk.

Sorry, that's the law!

You know your facts. There does NOT have to be a crosswalk if crossing at a corner. And they were at a corner.
The city could install a light that blinks yellow until someone pushes the button. Then the light would turn red until they cross. Maybe if everyone in that area would sign a petition and take it to the city council, something would be done. And I agree with the idea of the sped limit being lowered in front of a park.

You can make left hand turns on florida in both directions. And if you don't like the speed limit than go somewhere else.

Think you better read the jaywalking web site. It states that a crosswalk does not have to be marked.

If you would continue to read (if you even bothered to do so) you would come across the EXCEPTIONS.
*sigh* Why do I even care? I did my part as a parent and taught my children to properly cross the street. And I can assure that my siblings have taught my nieces and nephews the same. It's just too bad that these five had to suffer because their family didn't.
Is AOL still giving you 6 months free dial up? Just curious.
You are just the MOST rude and ignorant person who has ever posted. You think you know everything and are so smart. The problem is you never look in the mirror. You know nothing and are NOT smart. And I bet you don't even have kids.
I know the law because I write tickets to jaywalkers. So go back to school and do some reading. Learn the law and while you are at it, learn some manners.
