YES - all communities should be joining the Riverside county all digital public safety system.
- Digital technology allows for clearer communication and increased distance than older analoge systems
- More applications can run on this system
- Interoperability with other cities and agencies within Riverside county, now can more easily communicate with each other in large scale emergencies - fire, earthquake, flood, etc.
- The older systems in place today are at or nearly at their end of useful life and will require funds to upgrade or change in the next five or so years.
- These newer systems (although expensive) are progressive, modern, highly functional and will have a useful life of 15 to 20 years before heavy maintenance will need to happen.
- As our communities and agencies grow we need to capabilities of a new digital system to fill the void - a system that can grow and keep Riverside county competitive in the future. Other counties are struggling to decide whether to move forward with Digital or not - San Diego sheriff, Los Angeles county (will likely have to spend close to a BILLION dollars for a system that will not even support the entire county!).
- Digital portable radios allow firefighters, police and other agencies to carry smaller units on their person, with many options for headsets, etc.
- P25 the standard for digital radio systems ALLOWS agencies to purchase P25 compatible radios for mobiles and portables WHICH SAVE $$ vs. having to purchase propriety equipment!!
- MUCH effort was put into the research, discovery and decision process to purchase a new digital radio system - these new systems by Motorola, Harris, Cassidian and others as true state of the art - these companies put their reputations on the line to keep our communities and citizens safe!
It is the right thing to do ... one large system, managed by professional radio communication technicians means less overall overhead for each using agency and assurance that local cities will not have to duplicate personnel and efforts. Our employees can now to other tasks and at the end of the day do more relevant work for our citizens!
