Questions Linger after Agent's Shooting
LAREDO - The brazen attack on a Border Patrol agent has officials and Jim Hogg County residents asking what prompted the suspect to open fire.
The shooting happened early Thursday near FM 649 and Chihuahua Road. Border Patrol agents saw what looked like a stranded motorist. The vehicle had slammed into a deer.
A check of the license plates revealed the vehicle was stolen out of Waco.
One of the agents approached the vehicle and the suspect opened fire. The agent was shot in the hip.
The second agent returned fire killing the suspect.
"I saw police cars," a Jim Hogg County rancher said. He lives near the site of the shooting.
"I didn't know what happened," he said.
Border Patrol officials said the area is a smuggling corridor.
"Our agents put their lives on the line every day and night to protect our borders," Customs and Border Protection South Texas Cmdr. Robert L. Harris said.
"This is an example of our dedicated public servants keeping our community and nation safe from those who would do us harm. We pray for the speedy recovery of our agent," Harris said.
Officials have not released the suspect's identity. The agent was released from a hospital Thursday.
