The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center prepaid the Town of Falmouth 1 million dollars in RECs,renewable energy credits.
Why would the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center or anyone in the world give someone the equivalent of one million dollars ?
The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) today called the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, a quasi-public agency tasked with encouraging renewable energy technologies in the State of Massachusetts, gambled $5.28 million in public funds to purchase two new (at the time) Vestas V82 – 1.65 megawatt wind turbines.
The Mass CEC, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center was stuck with two politically embarrassing turbines they couldn't site anywhere in Massachusetts. The Mass CEC failed to sell the turbines at an auction. The only way to sell the turbines was to offer Falmouth one million dollars in the form of renewable energy credits.
The Vestas V 82-1.65 megawatt turbines are actually Neg Micon NM 82- 1.65 megawatt wind turbines. Neg Micon went out of business because of gear box failures. Vestas bought out the bankrupt company and still used the gear box system in the V-82. In New England there is a history of megawatt turbines having catastrophic gear box failures which end the life of these turbines in three to five years .
