Read em and weep:

http://www.boston.com/news/special/education/...

Only 26% of the student population for all grades combined is proficient in math.

Sullivan School? None of the 4th graders are advanced, and nearly half need improvement in math and English.

What is wrong with you people? Your city is failing before your eyes and you do nothing!

Districts that do well are those with resources that North Adams lacks. Highly paid teachers and staffs, involved parents who provide enrichment, out-of-the- classroom educational experiences, good nutrition and quality housing. Successful communities pay much higher taxes than North Adams. The mystery, to me, is that North Adams has a vocal group, led by Mr. Cardimino, that screams about taxes, but demands things that cost money. But then it fights a plan that will give the city money for a new school. You can't have your cake and eat it, too.

The North Adams Schools are actually better than they were just a few years ago. Now they just suck. Before they really sucked with higher dropout rates and one-size-fits-all administration.

The problems are many fold. Our district is funded locally at the lowest level allowed by law, thanks mostly to the anti-tax folks. There were some dramatic cuts after prop 2.5 failed, but no one gives a damn in this city. Things like teachers aides, elementary art and foreign language are "wasteful." If they had cut sports instead, people would have screamed bloody murder.

The district has a horrible time recruiting and keeping new talent as the old guard of teachers retires. The only bright new teachers that stay are those who are on a mission, because they can find better pay and less challenging kids in 95% of the rest of the state.

Our SPED rates are insanely high and the state's funding mechanism doesn't even come close to funding what those kids need.

Our student poverty rate is insanely high, but even though the state kicks in most of our budget, the low local contribution means that the rich kid in Weston and poor kid in North Adams are treated the same financially in the eyes of the state. Yet study after study after study shows that poor kids need almost twice the amount of resources to even have a chance to succeed academically.

Worst of all, we have a mentality of "what was good enough for me is good enough for my kids" in this city. What this misses is that North Adams has one of the lowest average incomes in the state and it is well below national averages too. It misses that the economy has dramatically changed in the last generation and nothing good is going to come to this city on its own, and a large chunk of the equation that makes a city successful is good schools.

It's very clear that most residents don't know what good schools look like or how they affect of the overall community. That is a real shame.

They would be much higher if kids had a new school. That has to be the problem? Wait maybe if we throw more $ into the school system?

It costs money to educate kids. North Adams folks seem to want everything for free.

It seems that an elected mayor, and he WAS elected, should be trusted to do what is best for the city. People who TRUST him elected him. I have seen NO evidence that he has any "special" interests. Rather, he shows a sincere desire to make North Adams a better place. No matter what he does, there will be those who will make waves about it. Those are the people who have "special" interests, and that interest is to cause trouble.

. You should write that you're doing pretty well if you actually went to college, which you obviously did not.

no need to worry people. I see that a group in Williamstown is pushing hard to build lots of affordable housing in that town. Once they do that the degenerates will move to the Village Beautiful and destroy their school stats bolstering North Adams. Must be Williamstown wants to be like North Adams.

What do people expect. Majority of the kids in this city are of the illegitimate rat race and have no hope of learning based on their parents. Learning continues after school and at home but these poor kids have illegitimate idiot parents, or I should say parent , since most have " baby daddy's " instead of actual fathers an some cases mothers. Very few have role models except for thug rappers/celebrities and athletes like Vick. Way to many kids grow up and are raised that welfare and handouts are the norm and that its ok to be artificially labelled with a disorder in order for the parents, ummm I mean parent , be able to get more welfare.

Pssst. He's not a teacher. He's making a lame attempt to bait and mock them. And he got schooled for it.

But now that you mention it, I know plenty of parents who don't teach their kids a damn thing. That's part of our problem here in North Adams.

Your right, there are some parents that don't give two but, many do and try very hard to make sure their kids are on the right track.I believe that since teachers see the kids for a longer period of time each day, they are the second defense in making sure kids are on the right track. And the teachers who feel the way that was mentioned shouldn't teach, since they knew what they were getting into. Yes! THEY DO HAVE A JOB AND A HALF TO DO WITH SOME KIDS.
