cant help but wonder

United States

#1 Feb 19, 2010
I have a coworker who has on several occasions let me and other people know that she recieves a LARGE amount of food stamps each month. Now one of her kids is over 18 and the other is getting close, her husband WILL NOT KEEP A JOB, she has five or six adults living with her (that will not work but are more than capable) and if i am correct maybe there are two babies in the home. I cant help but wonder why the government gives money to these people when ALL of the adults in the home are capable of holding a job. I believe that the system is backwards and that we reward people for being sorry and lazy.......but those of us who work for a living have to struggle. I hold a job where i barely make 13,000 a year but everytime i have needed some assistance they have laughed at me and told me i make too much money........Wouldnt it be better to reward the people who are trying to work and take care of their buisness with a little help when needed? I dont want a handout.....if i wanted that i wouldnt be out everyday working...i just think that if the government is going to help people it should be the people who are out trying to help themselves......

Yep, in this booming economy I can't see why anyone who is capable of working does not have a job... Yep last time I checked every business is hiring and money is flowing from the clouds..

There are two sides to every coin, most people who have a job are struggling to keep it. Just a thought...

Have you ever thought maybe she is lying at some point to get the assistance.......lying by omission is just as bad as lying......the laws that determine her amount to receive, would also determine your amount

Yep, look around town. I estimate that 1/3 of all the econommic activity in our county of 12,000 residents is supported by a Gov't check. 3-4000 Gov't checks come thru our PO every month. Many legitimate disbursements, but many are a result of fraud. 30 million on food stamps. That's 10% of our population. Cheating and stealing has become vogue. From Wall Street to Main Street. No accountablility, culpability from regulators and lack of prosecutions. Slowly but surely they are moving us towards total dependence on the Gov't.
It will only get worse.

I bet 95% of the Mexicans in Jeff Davis County is getting food Stamp. The other 5% are the white and blacks. These mexicans come over to united states illegal live 5 or 6 familys together all of the work which everybody should know a mexican will work for low pay one mexican sit at the house out of that family and draws EBT (FoodStamps), TANF (Welfare Check, Etc. For the whole 5 or 6 familys. I know this cause I talked to a mexican one time He speaks real good English and he told me that Mexicans will live in a 2 or 3 bedroom mobile home trailer with 5 or 6 Familys. When a whiteman or blackman tries to get a job at Beasley Timer or Thompsons or Palletone they can't cause all the Mexicans has got them Jobs. How do you think these mexicans can get Nice Vehicles with a low paying job because the live 5 or 6 familys together and get help from the Goverment and plus they all work.

I agree with you. This is a good point. I have been to Walmart and seen people who were getting foodstamps and couldn't understand why.

He was actually pointing out how government responded to the issue, he wasn't giving his own personal view- it was more of an attack on liberal ideals. Can't remember whom he was addressing, but it was in '85 or '86 I think.

I'm all for talking about him, and for good measure I could throw in some nice things that I really believe about the man.

Do I miss him yet? In comparison to our current President.. yes. Short answer, no.:P

Correct me if I'm wrong was'nt it Bush that shortened the term you could get welfare , foodstamps and unemployeement? Then came Obama and reversed it where you could draw it for a longer term than in the originaly policy ? With that said is the reason most people dont car if they have a job cause it to easy to get a dm gov check and set on there a$$ as long as they want too. No dm wonder there so many lazy Americans trying to get free money. Now who's to blame dm sure not Bush

DoG you are correct... Jeez never thought I would say that! lol!

The welfare "reform" of the Clinton era consists of two major elements: a revolutionary change in the basic goals set by the federal government; and a dramatic "devolution" of responsibility – turning what used to be a federal, centralized system over to the states.

Reflecting the new federal mission, welfare rules now:

* Require most recipients to work within two years of receiving assistance,
* Limit most assistance to five years total, and
* Let states establish "family caps" to deny additional benefits to mothers for children born while the mothers are already on public assistance.

This day and time there are alot of people out of jobs because of business closings or downsizing. Having to draw uemployment or getting a gov check is not what most that are out of work want. When you lose your job you lose all benefits. Most didn't have a choice about being unemployed. So let's just hope you don't lose your job. Walk a mile in someone elses shoes before you judge. And if you know where they are hiring at feel free you tell everyone.

The only thing we can do to help with the food stamp fraud is to report abuse. It is just to easy to get government assistance because of the kids involved. You have to try to help the kids because they can't help having sorry parents.

I agree with another poster above that assistance should be granted to those that qualify for a short period. I have a timeline in mind that it should be used. It was never designed to be a way of life and should only be a temporary measure. I also believe in calling the hotline to report abuse. It could lead to the government investigating and questioning the person to see if they truly are qualified to receive assistance.
