On the afternoon of August 14, my 10 year old daughter and two of her friends went on their bikes to McDonalds on Pulaski Avenue to have a soda. They laid their bikes on the ground outside, right in front of the glass where they sat to drink their sodas, in order to watch the bikes. Suddenly two black kids, about 10-12 years old, came running and stole two of their bikes speeding towards 147th St, where they then turned east. My daughter and her friends tried to chase them but couldn’t keep up with them.
The girls called the MPD. When an officer arrived he informed that if they didn’t have the bikes serial numbers there was not much the Police could do. However, he took their names, phone numbers and the bike descriptions.
About two hours later on the same day, an officer called informing he had stopped one kid on a bike fitting the description the girls gave and that he admitted that some friends gave him the bike which they had stolen from McDonalds. We went to the police station and it was one of the stolen bikes from the girls, my daughter’s friend. The officer told us he had the supposed names and addresses of the kids who stole the bikes and would follow up with their parents because they were minors. His intention was to get the second bike.
About three weeks went by and just two days ago, Officer Alton called to inform he saw a group of kids on bikes on 147th Street, including the kid that had the first stolen bike and decided to stop them. They dropped two bikes and left running. As it turns out, one of the bikes was the other stolen bike at McDonalds, my daughter’s. Officer Alton had told my 10 year old that he was not going to give up until her bike showed up, and he sure kept his word.
He also suggested that from now on, we take our bikes to the police station during work days and have them registered in case they are stolen and to also take pictures of them. So I’m taking the two we have this week to have them registered.
I want to thank the MPD for recuperating both stolen bikes and especially Officer Alton for not giving up on recuperating my daughter’s bike.
On behalf of my whole family…THANK YOU!

This is exactly why chief needs to take over for Terry. Imagine if we were going after bike thieves like we were going agonst governemtn waste and abuse Cronyism. Congradulations to the chief for being such good example to his officers. he needs to think about getting into politics. Maybe a midlothian tea party canditate someone who not afraid of being "poltically correct and not just kissing ass all time but who I am I kidding we will never elect a great american like the chief. this is OBAMAnation

I have to give props to officer Alton, when a youth from Posen (not a gang member) used a pellet gun to knock out my cars side window and a neighbors picture window, he not only caught them, but called me to tell me to get the police report and contact the kids father, as he wanted to pay for the damage. He also told me this kid had never been in trouble before and he thought really he was a god kid that made one dumb mistake, but now was facing a felony charge. We contacted them, and the boy and his father came to my house and paid for the repair, even paid us in a bit for our time, even though they came out and brought it back to the shop for the repair. Lets just say this kid looked a bit worst for wear from "falling down or something"? But he apologized, and I truly believe this was not his normal behavior. I call the states attorney's office and asked for the person handling the case, they returned my called. I asked if they could drop the felony charges against him as it was just a stupid prank, and he made restitution on his own. I do not think a kid that makes a stupid mistake should have it follow him for the rest of his life. Nobody was hurt, well maybe he was, mentally and a bit more. Officer Alton used what many officers today do not, common sense and compassion for this kid. He put a scare into this kid, and made everything right. There should be more like him on our force.

You wish to bash the police in the chief's time of glory?! Who is setting the example? It's the chief dum-dum. He is a good man and the rank and file are learning from him. And they are becoming stronger all the time able to stop the onslaught if they pay attention to him

And yes I am a Sad Case for sure, never said I wasn't.

Spray spray on you. sad case, I totally agree with you. This has nothing to do with the chief of police. Officer Alton just goes out of his way for Midlothian residents. I'm happy he's a cop in our village. By the way, I've read Ann Marie's blogs tonight and it seems like she's had a few too much...if you know what I mean.

Never seen him face to face just over the phone, but he is an asset to our community. Many other officers would have wanted to throw the book at this kid, he charged him because it was his job, but it was not to go out of his way to help this kid from ruining the rest of his life. He did so in his own way, using his mind. An officer that thinks before he acts and cares for citizens, a rare find in today's police forces. By doing these little things, which we really do not know how many times he has, he makes people think a bit better of how police use their powers, and many others should follow his lead. When people have trust in their police departments, they tend to not be afraid of them, which can lead to much better prevention of crime instead of enforcement. Unfortunately, many police departments have changed from crime prevention to crime enforcement, with many of them treating everyone as a suspect or civilian instead of what we are citizens. When I reported a burglary in my garage a few years ago, one officer was acting as though I personally did something to him, remember I was reporting a crime, and this guy goes and runs MY name for wants and warrants. I asked the other officer (by the way who do shake my hand and treated me like everyone should be treated), what his problem was, he himself said he was a bit power hungry and hated working with him. I never even got his name, but I have not seen him again either. I think prevention instead of enforcement is a much better way of policing. Oh and Ann, she is a complete nut job, who eats her Fruit Loops in the morning with Jameson instead of milk, then sleeps all day and every so often makes a crazy appearance here. Also, I know the MPD and other village officials look at these forums, and please do not rip into one of your better officers for doing above and beyond what his job calls for.

Most of the police would be afraid of being "politically correct" to help out a "white boy". This is what we need. We need to throw the book at these blacks and devote more resources to black on white crime like with the stolen bike that this thread is about, but we need officers like in Sad's situation to lobby for our own kind like Sad Case was sayin happened with him so white kids don't end up as collateral damage in our towns war on crime. I mean who cares if some harmless white kid shoots out your car window with a pellet gun. He's White! Duh. But if a black steals a bicycle, we need dedicated officers like Alton to go hunt these blacks down. It's only fair isn't it?

I also have had dealings with Ofc. Alton. He has always shown true professionism and uses his head. I feel that in a few years he would make a great chief.

This was the same Police Officer who shot the guy who was trying to run him over. They should give the Officer a medal for what he did and recognize his great contribution to the Village.
