Hazard sure is a small town; Everyone seems to know one another, you can barely make a trip out shopping without running into an old schoolmate or a family member. The Old men gather at the flea market on weekends to talk politics with one another and trade war stories. The older women still sit on their gossip benches calling up all of their friends to brag about their children and grandchildren (some of them even have facebook now). If you're my age, you can go get your license renewed at the Court House by the same lady who took the picture for your permit when you were still a teenager. The Minister at the Church where you once attended Bible Study, still recognizes you on the street and invites you to Church, even if you haven't been there or any other Church since then. Chances are you and your best friend now both dated the same boys in high school, one of you might have even married one of them. And then there are the not so nice moments and realities; You go to your high school reunion and realize that so many of your old classmates aren't there, and not always because they were too busy, or working, or just couldn't make it to town for the occasion. Friends and Strangers sometimes judge you based on gossip they've heard from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from somebody's cousin, and so on. And it sure seems like everyone is getting laid off, or is otherwise in a tough spot.
Sunday, I was at the Flea Market in Hazard, not looking for anything special. My two year old Daughter and I wandered into a small booth where two older gentleman were picking on their guitars. My very social and beautiful little girl was very curious about their guitars and they played us an old hymn I remember hearing at Tent Revivals over twenty years ago. My Daughter just swayed and danced to the music and watched very intently, and when they were done playing, she said "Thank you" as did I. And we made our way through the market without much to show for our day except a few delicious apples and a remembered song to hum for the rest of the day.
So, the point I'm really trying to make, is that I still feel it is all worth saving. But it can't be done alone. What sort of Community do you want to be a part of?

Agree, there many good people in our area and many fond memories. Good will prevail, the economy will eventuallly improve and the drug people will not survive much longer

I wish things could be saved it would be wonderful. I think we should be willing to lend a helping hand. But it does not seem to be that way anymore. Family's that was once really close. Are now trying to rip each others throats out. I can not understand this. I would love for it to be like it was years ago. But when family does not stick together. It's really hard think strangers will stand by you. But sometimes a stranger will be there for you before family will. I do love my community and would not leave it for anything. And would help anyone in anyway possible. Lets just PRAY IT GETS BETTER!

I posted this here for a few reasons; Topix seems to be a media used in Hazard to hurt one another. And even those who don't use the site to spread gossip, do use it to speak freely which is always a good use of social media.
But saving our community isn't just about being nice, or not nice. It isn't just about family. It would be simple to pinpoint the problems of our entire community on one or two things; Drugs, Scandal, Politics, etc. But rather saving our Community might mean saving ourselves first.
If you are using drugs, please stop. It isn't just you that your decision effects. Your drug use effects your family, children if you have any, and strangers around you even if you don't even know them. I might not seem like a big deal to you, but companies use drug statistic for the area when determining whether to build factories, facilities, and put job opportunities in an area.
If you have children, please be mindful of the person you are raising them to be. Bullying in schools has become an epidemic, Hazard is definitely not immune. It is our responsibility as parents to set an example for our children. The old adage "Do as I say, not as I do" just isn't going to provide our children with the values and morality that we may hope to pass on to our them. Why not let us raise them to be better people than we are?
If you are a church-going individual, please take a moment to invite others to your church, rather than mentally deem that person unworthy of your church. Who did Christ ever say was unworthy of him?
Love your family, despite themselves, despite disagreement, despite troubles. They will be the only family you will ever have.
I'm asking for values, compassion, honesty, tradition, tolerance, love.
Better people, always means a better community. We can't force anyone else to be a better person, but we can choose to be better people for ourselves.

Every day I see our town and community sink deeper and lower into something I do not want to be a part of. But at least once a month I find myself coming across something, or someone that just puts a glimmer of hope in my heart.
