Ms. Amburgey the best teacher..get real..she is the one who sends all her homework home for the parents to do while she sits up there on her throne!

I worked for several years at different Perry Co schools and by far Leatherwood is the BEST school in the county. The problem is there are certain parents or should I say one parent from Slemp that tries to run the school & thinks her child is better than all the other kids and that everything should go her way. There are not very many people on Lwood that likes this parent including a lot of her family. Mrs. Kersey is the best teacher in Perry Co but this certain parent doesn't like her at all. This is a parent that is more worried about herself than the kids. She knows who she is and should grow up and mind her own business. By the way, Viper was the worst school I ever worked at.

I have stayed off the stupid site for ever now...but this topic of discussion is insane. I hear things about teachers wanting to teach their own kids..that happens at every freaking school..give me break. Teachers on the cell phones... I doubt Roark letting that by. You know Roark right? that principal you are all talking about...yeah that's him...lol. Leatherwood wants parents money....lest us not forget that Leatherwood is the last school to receive funding because of location. The school CAN NOT help that. I am not taking up for this school because I went there...I just think people on here are overlooking the big picture. If you don't like Leatherwood..tell the school board of Perry county. Only they have final say on improving the school. I want EVERYONE when considering a school to look at average GPA's, the programs offered, teacher/parent involvement, and test scores before making a decision. It is not about politics or gossip it is about your child's future.

In my opinion, Leatherwood was a great learning experence for me. I was not of the "higher" class, no relations to any of the teachers, and none of "the click", actually came from the home of a drug dealer, with an absent mother, yet i graduated with a 4.0 and recieved over half of the rewards on graduation night. And i am now a college student. I went to Hayes Lewis also, that school was not a good experience for me. i recall one of the math teachers saying, "are u stupid?" because she called me up to the board to do a problem and i didn't know how to do it. But thats been many years ago and things may have changed. All Leatherwood's teachers were wonderful to me! As for Mrs. Amburgey, she's only taught between 2 ranges of classes, 2-3 (combined) and 4th and 5th (combined) and this isn't so Lauren can be in her class. I was in her first bunch of students when she came to Leatherwood, teaching 2-3 then when i got in 5th she moved to 5th grade. I switched schools in the middle of my 5th grade year and didnt come back til my 6th grade year, and she wrote me letters often. She was a true blessing for me, she taught me so much, as well as a good friend. i have so many precious memories at Leatherwood and wouldn't take any of them back. It's like any other school system this day in time, what happened to "no child is left behind"? I have a sibling and 2 Nieces attending leatherwood at this time, i do see a change in the way things were done when i went there. But weather it's Leatherwood, Viper, Hayes Lewis... if you teach your own child, theres goning to be a motherly instinct that takes in effect before you realize it. I think all of the school systems need to go back to "teaching class" instead of "keeping up with the jones'" School systems were lucky to have a computer lab when i went there, now each child has a laptop. I'm sure all schools have parents who feel like it is being ran by "the click" and i've noticed in the past years, visiting different grade schools, there are clicks, but that is our job to tell our kids "you are no less than they are, we all put our pants on one leg at a time." If you tell them that enough, they are going to feel right up there with the teachers kids. So when u see the bad things about Leatherwood, just think it's everywhere. Good luck in choosing a school for your child! God Bless!

Yes the school has really shaped up! We are really thankful for the two new janitors, they are great! Also alot of the big improvements that have been made have been done by parent volunteers. I guess parents are fed up and have decided to take their school back. The school has such a bad image, they need to unite as one and not this group against this group. PTO, Site Base and parents need to come together and quit worrying about a power struggle! There is always a way if you really want something done, people can cut through the red tape and go around the school politics. Parents hold your head up high and hold your ground with the school politics, after all you are the majority, people take your school back!

IHAVE BEEN READING THIS BOARD, AND I JUST CAN'T SIT BACK AND REMAIN SILENT ANY LONGER. WHO ARE YOU KIDDING ABOUT BEING THE BEST TEACHER AT L'WOOD..JUST WATCH THE KIDS WALK OUT OF THE BUILDING IN THE EVENING WITH SO MUCH HOMEWORK THAT THEY CAN HARDLY CARRY IT HOME. IF YOU ASK, THE MAJORITY (99%) WOULD SAY IT IS FROM ONE TEACHER. AND THAT TEACHER IS BEING PRAISED, WHEN IN REALITY SHOULD BE QUESTIONED ABOUT WHY SHE GIVES SO MUCH HOMEWORK...AS FOR MRS. KERSEY, SHE WOULD SURELY WIN THE TOP TEACHER OF THE YEAR. SHE CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS, AND DOES EVERYTHING SHE CAN, AS A TEACHER TO MAKE SURE HER STUDENTS LEARN AND ARE TREATED FAIRLY. SOMEONE RECENTLY MADE A NEGATIVE COMMENT ABOUT HER, BECAUSE THEIR CHILDREN DID NOT GET PICKED TO GO ON THE SHOP WITH A MINER CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TRIP. IF THEY HAD TAKEN THE TIME TO ASK, THEY WOULD HAVE LEARNED THAT THE TEACHERS DID NOT PICK THE STUDENTS THAT WENT ON THE SHOPPING TRIP. THEY WERE CHOSEN BY THE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTERS IN EACH SCHOOL. THERE IS TALK ABOUT WHO MAY BE POSTING THESE COMMENTS. WE ALL KNOW THE REAL REASON WHY A CERTAIN SOMEONE WILL NOT LET HER CHILD CHEER FOR MRS. KERSEY, AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SCHOOL. MAYBE JEALOUSY WOULD BE THE BEST REASON. IT'S REALLY SAD, BECAUSE HER CHILD REALLY WANTS TO CHEER FOR MRS. KERSEY. OH WELL, SOMETIMES THE CHILD MUST SUFFER THROUGH THEIR PARENT'S IN-SECURITIES. AS FAR AS HER MOTHER, SAM YOU GOT IT RIGHT. MRS. KERSEY'S MOTHER IS A KIND AND HONEST PERSON. AND YES LIKE MOTHER LIKE DAUGHTER, MRS. KERSEY WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW IN HER MOTHER'S FOOTSTEPS AND CONTINUE TO BE A SUCCESS IN SPITE OF THE TROUBLED FEW PEOPLE WHO WALK THE HALLWAYS OF LEATHERWOOD ELE. WITH THEIR NEGATIVE COMMENTS AND TROUBLED MINDS.

I know some of the cheerleaders parents that have a child on her team this year and they had to pay $175.00 for a warm-up shoes socks hairbow and briefs. And they were really upset that their children are not competing in the county comp. and that they only cheered at about 5 ballgames and had 5 practices. If she was such a good person and coach she would have taken the time to teach them something. If not don't coach if you don't have the time to give to the kids.

The parents were told the expenses from the beginning, and the parents are the ones who ask for the warm ups. They were also told that they would only be cheering at home games. Your information is wrong. They cheered at all the home games and at PCC. As far as practices, they had practice at least 3 times a week. I should know, because I am there every time they have practice. The snows put a damper on things at Leatherwood as well as other schools. The squad done good this year, and as far as competition, the sponsor has the responibility of deciding when they are ready to compete with the bigger schools. With your attitude, I'm sure you are glad the season is over

I am so glad someone else feels the way i do, parent of leatherwood, about this teacher. I love mrs kersey also and so do my kids. I think this one teacher has taught her child almost every year since she has come out of kindergarten. Is she going to start over with the other now? But she does have one more year to teach her oldest child.

first of all I don't have a girl cheering up there but I am friends with most parent's And if they had practice 3 days a week they would be ready to compete against any team no matter how big they are. But at least you should represent your school and teach the kids to have school spirit. And I know of one game that they cheered for the B team and then most of the squad and the coach left and did not support the A team players and one game was optional they could cheer if they wanted too. that is not being a good coach. And as for Mrs. Kersey her rep speaks for itself. Has anyone checked to see if she has paid her $175.00 up front or is she waiting on the other parents to pay for it.

I have kids that go to L-Wood and I went to school there myself as a child. I agree it has changed alot since I was in school there, but I also have to say that they are some great teacher's up there and some that are not so great. I think we can all say every school has the same situations. I also would like to say tat yes my kids come home with alot of homework and I have often wondered why they have so much because I agree that is the teacher's job to teach not us parents I know that we want to help our children and get them the best education but we can't do it all by ourselves the techers have to do their job too. I have seen that some teachers do make a difference with certain children rather than others especially if the other student is a child of a teacher or as you all have said "in the click" there is deffinalty a click at the school. But even though they think they are better than everyone else I know better so I shrug it off and think nothing more of it. They wipe their ass the same way I do..lol. Yes, I know the funding is low for L-wood school but I agree everyday it is always something money wise they nickle and dime you to death. I don't agree with when Mr. Roark rewards the kids with a feild trip somewhere and then we have to pay for everything the tickets, the food everything. It's like umm how is that a reward if we have to pay for it? That's not a reward in my oppinnion that's us rewarding our kid's not him. But both of my kid's are doing great in school they are both on the A-B honor roll and we are not in the click. We are not rich people we are just a simple family. But yes there are issues that need to be brought to the surface at the school. But all in all I am pleased with the way my kids are doing, and I think that's what we all need to be concerned with. We need to focus on our kid's and their well being and ther education if nothing is hindering that then what's the problem as long sa they are doing good why bother it. As the old saying goes "of it aint broke don't fix it." lol. But all I worry about is if my kids are doing their best and I make sure if they are struggling in anything I find out why and how we can fix it. I dont worry about what the teacher's do or who they are talking about. As long as it dosen't interfer with my kid's education then I dont need to worry about it.

It doesnt matter. Each year more and more kids are being took out of Leatherwood and placed in Viper or R.W Or Hayes Lewis. Right now Leatherwood has the least amount of kids in the county, right at 200 kids. They require atleast 200 to keep a school running. IMO next year there will be even less and Leatherwood Elementary will be shut down all together. For the simple fact that people keep removing their kids because of this problem. I also think theres some great teachers at Leatherwood, and they are old fashioned, go to one the Christmas plays. They are VERY Christian oriented, Everybody knows everybody, but everybody talks. Its like that everywhere you go tho.
