How can we make Hazard a great area again? It is so beautiful. How do we bring in new industries and businesses? Get corporations to invest in the wonderful area. It would mean some of the low-lifes would have to shape up or ship out. Take a little pride in themselves their family and their town. What do you think? Can we bring it back?????? I think so.

The only way to make Hazard Ky, beautiful again is if I moved back there. No truer words ever spoken.

Please, this is not what I wanted this post to be about. Let's get serious about returning Hazard to its glory days. Let's be productive here people.

Builds some roads, last road built was the by-pass !Vote in people with a vision for the future ,rather than how much money they can steal !!! We have the natural beauty here just as Tenn does. Get rid of trash beside the roads, fix the sewer by Food City. Have some law enforcement get the hoes of the street, arrest drug dealers! Build a strip mall with stuff other than a dollar store or a pukie resturant ! Forget the smoking ban, have a tittie bar.

Tear down all the stores, get new stores. Get a mall, get rid of cheap dollar stores. Get stores that has nice clothes and name brands. This way ppl have to buy themselves and their children nice clothes and shoes. Its sickening to see a bunch of ppl and kids in cheap dollar store clothes and shoes. Tacky, tacky tacky.

Agreed. I had high hopes for the construction at the old Rax site then it was just another Dollar General. London has two nice Italian places
To eat and their population can't be much higher than ours and surrounding
Counties. It's a shame, really. There's so much potential here and it simply goes to waste.

Are you all talking about the same Hazard, Ky that I grew up in and would not live in again if Macy's came to town? Hazard will never be like the glory days again. The drug addicts and drug dealers have taken over. People that used to care are drug addicts now and the rest are the dealers. The officials are all crooks or soon will be. The police are crooks. The hospital apparently sucks according to Topix. I honestly do not see one good thing about Hazard at this time. The mines have shut down. Very few people are working and the ones that are working are more worried about feeding their families than buying name brand clothes. I don't know what you people from MD and Va. are even doing on this site anyway. Can't you find anyone to talk to or make fun of in your town?? GEEZ!!

Utilize downtown as an entertainment district

Make the black gold festival as an "international Traditional Arts Festival"

USE some of the dozens of reclamation sites... off road truck racing/horse riding-cycling park ect.

Stop the coal camp mentallity of running new entertaining based businesses (that aren't owned by the same small embedded group)out of business.

Other cities have learned that focusing soley on bypass business zones, kills downtowns...
No downtown = not a city, but a suburb!

It says in The Hazard Herald that the Arts is the next big economic thing for SE Kentucky. Not so!. You know I can't sell one little painting I do!!!. They're very good ones and I can't get $5 out of them, it takes about $8 to paint one. I LL NEVER-EVER DO ANOTHER STINKING PAINTING AGAIN!!!.

Again? Lol! Well, whatever you think was great about it has passed. It takes more than industry and infrastructure to make a place great. It starts with families. The family unit has been replaced with dysfunctional togetherness. Grandparents and Aunts raising babies that aren't theirs, none of the churches are preaching against sin for fear of 'offending' sinners. The money-bag coal train has pulled out from the station and instead of displaced miners banding together to do something brilliant they follow county leaders around to useless peprallies. How about a group of former miners lead something of their own initiative for a change? Something with honesty...

Those with knowlege (not necessarily educated) have been outwitted by the progressive anti-family generation, and lack of sound biblical churches are to blame for letting them get a foothold. But then, sound biblical churches were never Hazards' forte' anyways. Corrupt people have established a corrupt government, a corrupt market, and corrupt school system, and a great many other things destined for failure. Want to make Hazard great again? Start with family.

and for you brother...you keep on painting if it's in your soul. Picasso didn't sell many paintings in his day, but we're glad he kept painting!

These are all good ideas and observations, but until the engrained control by those few families is relenquished, there is little hope of progress in Hazard.
The haves do not wish to jeapodise their financial benifits brought through the local government members.
And they also don't seem to be interested in partnering with any new movers and shakers.
I mean, they did throw poor old Nan in there to keep their hands full.

When was Hazard EVER great. I'm 53 and lived there nearly all my life and I can tell you honestly it's been a shithole for at least 53 years.

The reason, if you don't know, is because Hazard is a spiritual desert. It is void of God. He has turned his back on Hazard, and with good reason, in my opinion.

I was there this past summer for a few months and what I saw EVERYWHERE was absolutely sickening. You people might not see it, because you live there daily. Kinda like when you see a little baby every day, you don't realize how fast they grow, but go away for a couple of years and then come back and you realize how big they've gotten. If you was to leave for 1 year, then go back, you'd understand what I mean. I actually puked my guts out several times while I was there, because of the... well, just everything.

At least one local preacher and his family was selling methadone. I witnessed it first hand. Between 3 people in the family they get 360 methadone a month and sell most of them for $15 each. And I'm talking about a preacher that preaches every Sunday morning.

I personally know SEVERAL people in Hazard that draws a disability check and works every chance they get. One in particular took on a house building job while I was there. Can you build a house if you're really disabled? And this person and his whole family goes to church every Sunday morning.

A friend of mine had a mud slide come off the hill behind his house and so he had some financial difficulties. I went to the local church to see if they would give him a box of food. The church told me "you can't feed them people. If you feed them one time, you'll have to do it the rest of their lives, just like a stray dog". Those were the deacons exact words! I looked for those words in the Bible, but couldn't find them. Do any of you know where they're at?

My mother went to church religiously, as the saying goes. When she got on her death bed, not a single one of her fellow church members came to see her in the 11 months that it took her to die. That reminds me of in the Bible when God said "I looked throughout the land for a righteous man, but none could be found, no not even one".

Somebody on here said if you want to make Hazard great start with family. They're partially right, but you'd better go up the chain of command a little further than that. You'd better get down on your knees and pray as if your life depended on it. If you're lucky God will save you from that miserable, God forsaken place called Hazard. All the fancy dan clothes and stores and restaurants and roads can't help you any. With that train of thought, you're just trying to wash the outside of the cup, when the inside is what's dirty.

Hazard, like many communities is completely over run with drugs, whores, crooked officials, corruption, greed, and about a thousand other community killing diseases, and on top of the list, ignorance. And the crooked officials that run the place are going to do their level best to keep it that way. They feed off your ignorance and weak morals, it's how they prosper.

The devil himself walks the streets of Hazard, his name is corruption and his aim is destruction! Honestly, if you could see Hazard the way God sees it, you'd get on the Daniel Boone Parkway and start walking if that was your only choice to get the hell out of there. His people walked out of Egypt one time. Maybe it's time that Hazard followed suit.

God?
The Devil?
Really?
PEOPLE are the reason for the problems in Hazard. Not God or the Devil.
But you holier than thou religious zealots always want to make everything a religious issue.
Go to a God post and do your ranting and recruiting.
THIS discussion is about improving something, not tearing it down!

Not to mention there is a church everywhere you can stick one around here.
How much God do you want here anyway.
Everytime a business closes somebody runs in and throws a church in it.
It's hard to even have a business district thanks to all of the wanna be preachers eating up the commercial properties.

There you go. Thanks, you just proved my point. Even the preachers around there are trying to cash in!
And no, there is not a church everywhere you can stick one. A church is a body of "God loving" people, not a brick and mortar building. I've yet to see even one church anywhere in Eastern Kentucky. Where have you seen one?
And why are you so afraid of God. He won't bite. You don't have to be sore at him. All he did was created you and wants you to have a good life. Oh yeah, I forgot, there's that ignorance I was talking about, rearing it's ugly head again.
I do sincerely appreciate you proving my point. Whether you know it or not, EVERY problem you have is because you, and most of the rest of the country, side with satan every chance you get. Just like you did in your post here. Are you proud of yourself? Did it make Hazard any better? Do you think you can "build up" Hazard without God? Every breath you take is his, not yours. You're just a piece of trash that the world would be better off without, but me and God, we love you anyway. I don't know why, I guess we're just a little strange that way? Maybe that's why you hate us, maybe it's because you're too ignorant to understand.
So true

Thank you Cold Hard Truth. You have spoken the truth about the little corrupt city of Hazard, Ky. I lived there the first 40 years of my life and now when I visit I see the same things you do. It's sad and you are right about the lack of God in town. I think he's disgusted too.
