What is the best cell phone service in Hazard? I heard Appalachian Wireless is best. I have straight talk running on AT&T towers which is horrendous. Any suggestions?

Do yourself a favor and drive to Lexington, maybe London and sign up with Sprint or TMobile.

Appalachian Wireless is garbage. I signed up with a Blackberry a few years ago and suffered dropped calls frequently and my supposed "Nationwide Coverage" extended from Jeff to West Liberty. Not a single bar in larger cities such as Lexington or Cincinnati.

AT&T have a bad history of dropped calls, and another thing to watch out for if you plan you signing up for a data plan is that AT&T is practicing data caps and network throttling in a lot of areas. Not sure if its been implemented in this region as of yet, but its only a matter a time.

As far as coverage in the Hazard area goes, Verizon or Appalachian wireless are much better then AT&T. If you want Verizon though you may need to drive to Lexington, Ashland, London (?), or maybe someplace in VA to actually get it though. But I feel it's worth it. I switched from AT&T to Verizon and it's been a major improvement and I have nothing to complain about.

As far as Sprint or T-Mobile goes, I have no idea how those work down here, if they even do. I don't think I've heard of anyone down here using those, so I would ask somebody who does have those enforce switching to anything else.

well i can comment on appalachian wireless and AT&T, appalachian wireless is a huge rip-off, their service is not much if at all better than at&t around here and it is non existent if you travel very far outta southeastern ky, they need to change their slogan to "You Always Pay More With Appalachian Wireless." instead of 'get' more, lol, i have AT&T right now and i pay 53 bucks a month for unlimited everything, talk, text, and data, on their gophone deal and i really like it, the service compared to appalachian is only slightly less and definitely not worth paying double to app. for only slightly better signal, plus at&t are ten times better if you travel at all.

I have had Appalachian wireless service for 20 years it may be a bit high but if you havent been able to use your phones out of the area you had a problem. I have used my phone from here to Fla, and California with no problems. Good luck in decieding which to use every service has problems.

Sprint is useless in Hazard. If that's all you have you might as well throw it away.

had sprint before. they will charge you minutes no matter if its nights or weekends here because of roaming. Stay away. I promise it will be the biggest headache of your life. Verizon is badass. They pay to use Appalachian towers. Plus they will be letting Appalachian use their 4G LTE towers here very soon. I have had it for a while now. Never drop calls and service is great. Just waiting for them to get 4g!!!!!

I forgot I posted this. I've been killing myself trying to decide. I use straight talk off of att towers and it really does suck very much badly. I have been told that verizon is pretty good. I look on verizon and type in hazard zip and they say they don't even have coverage at all for that location. Is data in the area a lost cause? People talk about 4G coming and I don't see how 4g is possible when Verizon doesn't even acknowledge they even have coverage in Hazard. What kind of data do you guys get with Verizon?

Verizon does not have their own towers in the region, but instead they have a deal with Appalachian Wireless to use their towers. So basically, the service you get with Appalachian Wireless you'll get with Verizon.

I have Verizon (although I had to go out of town to get it), and I get great service all over town and on the road (granted, I haven't been up a lot of the hollers around here, but I hear it works in some of these places as well). However, this is NOT 3G, so data is going to be extremely slow unless you can hop on some wifi. That being said, I had AT&T before switching, and it wasn't 3G either, and there were lots of places I couldn't get service where I do now with Verizon.

I've heard rumors Appalachian Wireless is supposed to upgrade their towers to 4G sometime in the future. No clue if this is actually true or when it would actually happen, but it would be awesome if they did.

Tryed at&t and those prepaid net-ten phones but i didn't even get service here at home but I now have Appalachian wireless and although I have to pay top dollar for it I do get 3g service in certain parts of my house which is better than none at all I love it because where I live I can't even get high speed internet or WIFI so a computer is useless but i can get on the internet on my phone so i love it it is so bad here we can't even get city water here either guess im lucky they pick up the garbage
But like everyone is saying for instance my faming went on vacation to ocean island about one hour up the coast from myrtle beach a few weeks ago and I was lucky to get 1g service if isn't for WIFI I don't think I could of used my phone but im lucky because we dont travel very often so I don't really worried about it too much
just switch

Verizon is head. and shoulder better than AT&T. i wouldnt pay 5 a month for that garbage. they thumb their noses at Hazard as far as 3G even prestonsburg is 3G., now it's oct before 3G. if people want to pay that much have at it. at least i won't have to put my phone in a window or walk outside to get or make a call.

Thank you all for the input. I'm probably gonna just go with Verizon. Most important is getting rid of ATT because it doesn't work much at all. I'm in town in Hazard and I can't make a freakin call or hardly send a text. I go to Ohio on weekends so I'll just hit a store up there. The new question becomes...Iphone 4GS or the top android phone. Haha....never ends does it?:P

When I moved down here, I had ATT&T. It was horrible. I went with Verizon and had no problems. I also travel to Ohio once a month to visit family and have no issue with dropped calls or out of service. Well... Welcome to Hazard! What part of Ohio if you dont mind me asking?
