I also read the article "Maybe in Memphis" and the poster is right - it sure brought back memories. I left the area as soon as I graduated - however, my mother and relatives lived there all their lives. I didn't personally know any of the people in the article but my family did. Heard their names as a child.
This I can tell you for sure is the truth. Times MUST have changed in C'ville. I remember in 1963 driving with my aunt over to East 15th or so and paying African Americans a bottle of wine and/or money to vote for Clyde Orton. That was my first experience with politics - Caruthersville style. I remember asking my aunt - "will they vote for him?" - and she said, "why not?" Life was different and it's better now.
Hey, do any of y'all know - Matthew Duckworth? Would love to get in touch with him.

Not as you seem to think. I was merely curious if anyone remembers these things that are now very old news. If you want to think I am a gossip then think as you will for I could care less since I dont live around or near your vicinity. I doubt knowing you.....So a fickle finger of fate in your face.
I've lived around here for years and remember Clyde Orton well. What you say is true. Is it gossip if it was in the papers?

Chuckster hit the nail and hit it true about Clyde Orton and the scandals that surrounded him while being sheriff. Funny thing also is that the man got re-elected after being found guilty of the scandals. It probably shows you how an election can be rigged.

Please if anyone can help To the O'quin and CJ Frankum families
I am trying to locate Kathleen Frankum Glover she is/was my Aunt Kay married to James Glover, they had 2 daughters Patsy Gale and Joy Glover, CJ Frankum was police chief of Hayti in the late 50's early 60's my family name O'quin/Winberry also link with Pierce/Merritt/Smith families through marriage. CJ Frankum wife's name Virgie. I have sent email to chamber of commerce hoping to hear from someone. Several family members buried in Woodlawn cemetery in Hayti. So please anyone reading if you have information on family please email me at skypainter909@yahoo.com. Thank you Vicki O'quin Jackson
Virgie passed...Little Prairie Cemetary
It was wierd...Joy and Pat's Dad died in December and Kathleen passed on New Years Eve same year. Kathleen is also in Little Prairie Cemetary in Caruthersville Missouri.
Joy and Pat don't live here anymore. One lives in state and the other lives in another. In fact, I don't believe any of the family is here anymore.
I will pass the word that you are looking for them. Is this deja vu? I believe this was asked by someone before. Didn't I put you in contact once before? Your name sounds very familiar. Didn't you talk to Joy? And ME?

Does anyone remermber Raymond Ings? he was chief around the 60's and then stayed on the force till he retired. Do you remember him getting caught (while he was chief & on duty) stealing tires out on hwy 84.
What about Kermit Ledbetter?
Ricky Ings got caught stealing tires at Boyd Brothers...not Raymond. Raymond was Ricky's Dad. Raymond was a nice man! I know because my husband at the time was invited to go along with him and I told him that I would divorce his ass if he went!
Kermit Ledbetter is also gone! He lived in Portageville and was a cop there for a while. Then he passed away from cancer!

Its a true story about Clyde Orton....It is one of those things that no one wants to talk about. Im sure if you do research thru your local newspapers that the story can be dug up. I recall that John Dansforth did an investigation on the county sheriff Orton. Ole Denton had it made pushing his pills until he finally got caught and lost his license to practice....with some jail or probation time attached.
Clyde Orton seemed to always have new John Deere tractors I remember when two 4020 tractors tried to drive across the Mississppi when the FBI was near. Also when some one ran against him for Sheriff usually their home or business would burn. I am sure this was just a strange happening.

Hi City Girl:

I am a NPHS grad as well. I think that Mr. Potts would have to be dead. He was about 90 when I was in the 7th grade and I have been out of school for 34 years.

Does anyone remember the Quonset hut building on the west side of Hayti? What was the name of the building in the 70's? Something like Viverettes or something close?
