I'm disappointed about HT probable closing for sure. The $20 off coupons they've been sending out is a good indication something wasn't right.

I think Harris Teeter made a mistake building their first Gainesville store where they did. I live in Piedmont near the Catharpin gate and I would love a grocery store located closer to home. There are so many homes off of Catharpin and Heathcote, I know I am not the only one who would love a store right around the corner.

I have been using the Harris Teeter coupons but quite frankly, the store is out of my way. I go to Wegman's once in awhile but it would be nice to have a grocery store that is conveniently located to my neighborhood.

As for Walmart, I sure hope that isn't true. I don't think we need a Walmart in Haymarket.

UUGGGHHH - Walmart - no thanks. If I need that sort of shopping - I'll go to Manastyass.

I agree about the HT coupons - I think I have saved over 300 using them, although I only go in to spend $50 each time - no more. I love Wegmans - and their prices do seem lower, although I get sucked in by all the yummy prepared stuff they have - which in turn evens out I guess. I feel bad for HT, although I think they were dumb to open up there - especially knowing Wegmans had been on the Gville radar for quite some time.

Walmart has been trying to get into Haymarket for years. A few years ago they proposed a mixed-use center within Haymarket town limits with a "coutrified" Walmart (facade would be geared to a small town look) but was rejected.

I too don't want one anywhere near here but unfortunately it is probably inevitable. The nightmare strip mall for me would include a Walmart, a check cashing storefront, a dollar tree, and a really crappy buffet restaurant. Hard to avoid most of those things in the long run though as we continue to build out. Ultimately we will have at least one of just about everything...

Here's what we have to look forward to if Walmart moves in:

Bertucci's is scheduled to open April 26th. They have a phone number now and I got a voice message with the opening date.

Okay, I know what you're getting at, but I love the Dollar Tree!
BTW, on a completely different subject, Desiderio has posted its menus on the website and it looks great! Even the kids menu makes me hungry.

I heard that a Whole Foods is going to take the place of the Harris Teeter on 29. Can anyone confirm if this is correct. This is according to a person that works at Harris Teeter.

I had dinner tonight at the new asian place called Bi Sheng Asian Bistro. Right next to Afghan Kabob in Gainesville Square.

We had General Tso, Kung Pao, Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Lomein, and egg drop soup. Everything was very tasty. I recommend this place.

I think it's the best Chinese food in Gainesville. Quantity wise they don't serve as much as the other Asian places, but it's tastier and they pretty up the plate. I highly recommend.

Does anyone know what happened to 84 Lumber in Haymarket? They're gone but I wonder why?

I saw on the Haymarket Town site that the Quarles project is supposed to be underway soon. They say a CVS and a Fauquier Bank. I saw that the Heathcote project also shows a Fauqier Bank - so don't know what's up here.

84s problem was the fact that Lowes moved in and stole all their business and for that I never saw more then 2 or 3 cars in the lot. Its kinda sad that these big name brand hardware stores are taking over the smaller mom and pop stores... As a resident of Manassas from 79-01 I shopped JE RICE over on Mathis Avenue a lot. Sometimes Rice even had things I couldn't find at the bigger stores.

Back when Haymarket/Gainesville was a country little town 84 Lumber was a place for one stop shopping.. That wasn't even that long ago. I liked 84 lumber even though it wasn't fully stocked. I knew I could bypass crossing 29 and heading into Manasshole, by going to 84. Which is why I would LOVE to see a Home Depot come here on THIS side of 29.

All of the financing for the new construction on Heathcote is provided by Faquier Bank, as for whether or not an actual bank is going to be built there, I'm not sure. I know a Minnieland is going up on one side of the street, though it looks like they still have a lot of land to level out first. As for the other side, a building is actually starting to go up, but no signs as to what is it yet.

I saw a Fauqier Bank sign at the Heathcote site and just assumed it was a bank going in. Makes sense that it just means they're part of the project financially only.

That's what I initially thought too. I'm keeping an eye out for any new signs.

Appian Realty is the firm running the whole thing, they have a small page on their site but doesn't contain much info except for a small image of what the building is supposed to look like. I know they're advertising it as a mixed-use office/retail, somewhere in the neighborhood of five stories, I'm assuming some places to eat/shop will be on the ground floor with some offices above.

Does anyone know if Afghan Kabob's service issues have been resolved? I'd love to try it but not if it means crappy service and a 45 min wait :)

I just googled and them and I see they have a site including their menu: http://www.afghanfamouskabob.com/menu.htm
