I talked with a teacher at St. Anne's, the new all-girls school in Gainesville, and learned that in the 1980s Tipper Gore worked as a photographer for Kathleen Katz, the head of the school. Tipper helped Kathleen with her national magazine for women by taking photos for feature stories. At an open house Kathleen told girls that if they do their best and trust God, they can accomplish their dreams. This is worth sharing!

I know enough about Mrs. Katz to know that even if worked with Tipper Gore, she would never share her values.

Dear Parents,

I had only mentioned Tipper Gore among many other notable leaders who worked for my magazine or were freelance writers for it to share with the girls during a classroom discussion on the importance of developing to goals and moving forward without fear or intimidation -- of situations or people, regardless of their status. When I started a magazine more than 25 years ago, I approached people I did not know if they had an expertise or skill that was needed to accomplish a task.

At that time, former VP Al Gore was an unknown congressman from Tennessee. His wife, Tipper, was a photographer. At the time, she was not known to embrace radical positions. In fact, while she was still working as part-time photographer for a magazine I was publishing, she formed the Parent Music Resource Center (PMRC) after becoming distressed by the lyrics she heard on a Prince album she purchased for her 5th grade daughter. She along with others urged music industry executives to label the albums if lyrics included references to violence, drugs or sex. Instead of the media supporting her efforts, they denigrated the work of PMRC.

It is possible to work with someone and not embrace their entire political agenda. Tipper is a lovely woman, who put her children before her career. Now that her children are grown, she spends her time advocating for the mentally ill and homeless. Christ said, "What you do for the least of your brothers, you do for Him." Her work is for the least of our brothers and sisters. In this work, she is a role model for all of us.
