You've started something good.
I hope you start putting some real news and decent photos on the site.....not just amateur snapshots.
Update frequently. I live in Hawthorne and there is a of stuff going on that needs to be covered.
What's going on with the renovations at Joe's Tavern? Who has the best pizza? Why was there a sign on Mcdonalds the other day announcing "hiring 15 people now?" How is Gil doing?
As far as the weather goes, WX forecasts are available all over the web. You should provide original news content. Anyone with a computer can find the weather forecasts contained in their favorites.
Bottom line is, if you have a website and you want hits, update frequently with quality.

What busineses have gone under?

How is the HAZNAT cleanup going at the depot?
What's up with the water quality?

I think Steve has the right idea. Hawthorne does need REAL NEWS. Our local paper certainly does it's best to avoid topics with controversy or subjects that provoke the people to thought.
Wouldn't it be nice to say something like:
"Ed 'Smitty' Smith ran for Sheriff and told his supporters he was going to go after the illegal drug manufacturers and users in the county, and it is so obvious that there are more deputies patrolling in Hawthorne. Good for Smitty!"
We non-druggies are really tired of having to tolerate the drugs that have pervaded Hawthorne of recent time. It's time to give drugs the boot before it stomps on Hawthorne's future.

We'd like to see more exposure given to the fact that some people live in places they call home that we wouldn't even let our animals live in. There are yards in Hawthorne that still remain filled with trash and most of it, frankly, constitutes a fire danger. Where's the Fire Marshal or inspector here?
The animal shelter is abysmal. The shelter is ultimately the responsibility of the County Commissioners and the situation at the shelter must be addressed and addressed quickly. There is NO veterinarian in the county any where, except a Yerington practitioner who comes twice a month. Yet the Commissioners continue to allow people to have domestic pets, most of which run the streets or are not contained on leashes per the leash ordinance. Who's minding this store?? When residents fear taking a walk around town without carrying a big stick, something's wrong with this picture! I know what I'd do with that big stick...

ALSO - Jerri Tipton has recently joined the board of County Commissioners and is quietly learning the ropes. We all hope the ropes that Jerri learns to pull are the right ones, for the right reasons, for the best interests of Mineral County. The county is more than Hawthorne. We cannot ignore the interests of residents living at Mina, Luning, Sodaville or Schurz. The Commissioners serve all Mineral County residents and its time to reach out to the outer communities so we can all work together.
We need more news about what's going on in our government offices. Why do the Commissioner's have to spend time approving bills and invoices that the department directors could easily approve and then submit to the Commissioners as "Consent Calendar" items where ONE vote covers approval of all those items? If an item is questioned by one of the commissioner's or a member of the public, it could be pulled from the consent calendar and a discussion of the item held, including public comment. How easy is that? Instead of spending hours and hours on the general administrative business of the county, which the county pays it's directorial staff to conduct, the Commissioner's would actually have time to concentrate on devising some sort of progressive future for Hawthorne.

And speaking of public involvement in our government, how can the average resident who works during daytime hours participate? It would mean having to take time off work to go address the Commissioner's about something that concerns or affects them. How difficult would it be to alternately hold the meetings in the evenings or on weekend days?
Finally, what's with making the people wait to speak at the public comment period for items not listed on the agenda? Is this the Commissioner's way of inhibiting comment from the public by making them wait interminable numbers of hours just to comment on the fact that they would like to see the dogs cleared of the streets or that the street lights are not being maintained properly or ....whatever? Talk about an avoidance tactic!
Hawthorne has an opportunity to become a growing community with INTELLIGENT growth. We won't have any growth and chance of prosperity if every potential new employer or business is put through the present three ring circus they presently face.
In order for us to have a new motto to encourage such growth (like "It's happening at Hawthorne!" or "Hawthorne - we're happening!") something's going to HAVE TO HAPPEN to shake things loose at the helm here.
Wake up, Hawthorne. The world will continue to pass us by, just like the present bypass road, if the County doesn't open up and find a way to decide its own future!
