I get very concerned everytime I pass Portland Pets in Portland PA. I do not think everyone knows what this pet shop is all about. Number one no breeder sells the puppies to pet shop and if that was the case they would have to know a hell of alot of breeders. They sell their puppies cheap and claim they can get whatever kind of puppy you want. Its crazy b/c PA is the number one state for puppy mills in the USA. This was even seen on OPRAH. I just feel as if there are so many issues that everyone doesnt take a look at. These puppies are breed with their own familes which 1/2 of them come home with illnesses and birth defects which can be very costly on the owner. These are not healthy dogs. The conditions they life in are sickly and not maintained. I am just asking for everyone to investigate this issue and do not give business to people who dont care about you b/c they really just want to sell you a puppy that could be sick and not well breed.

I bought a mini dashuand there last years and he's very healthy. I also just purchased another male dashuand there and he's very healthy too. The owner of that pet shop has three dogs so I'm sure they are a pet lover.

It happened to us...we walked into the store to just look.. fell in love with a puppy and thought we were purchasing a puppy from local breeders.. as we were told... we found out afterwards that in fact they were from the PA Amish Country Mills..like on Oprah.. and after 1,000 dollars in medical and 3 months of having a sick puppy... you can say we RESCUED this one...I am ashamed of myself for falling into the trap that we were warned about ..we listened to how wonderful they were... and trusted them...our mistake..RESCUE RESCUE RESCUE... a quote from one of my kids "we never really had a puppy...she was so sick we couldnt really enjoy the puppy stage" out of the mouths of kids!

My brother has 2 dogs from here, my close friends son has a dog from here and all 3 are in magnificent condition! They are sweet, loving beautiful lil' adults now. I've personally met the owners and they take very good care of these dogs. They are there feeding, cleaning and taking care of the animals. MAYBE PEOPLE SHOULD READ THE BIG SIGNS : "PLEASE DONT HANDLE OR TOUCH PUPPIES TO AVOID SPREADING ILLNESS" people should respect this unless they are purchasing the puppy. Just my opinion.

In June I was so eager to buy a chihuahua, I looked all over, I even tried to get one at a shelter but none were there, no breeders would take me seriously, so I turned to portland pets which seemed clean and reasonable. I bought my little franky and he is adorable, but has quite a few health issues. For the first month he had terrible "ear mites" as so the owner told me and sold me an expensive bottle of ear mite drops with him. which shouldve gone away promptly, but ended up becoming a major issue involving several vet visits and expensive medication. Secondly since I got him he has had a terrible cough which is incurable after several vet visits and several hundred dollars of pet meds. In addition to health problems, franky is terrified of hands. I never hit him or hurt him, but he attacks hands, especially adult males. I love my dog, but I was beginning to question his quality. So I searched his "breeder" Vernon Bauman. Which turns out to be the owner of a puppy mill. This upset me, because I am all about animal rights and I'm sad I supported that filthy greedy business. They say they are a "nice family business" but I think they are hiding the truth. They are greedy and dont care about you or the puppies they sell. My new mission is to track down Franky's mom so they can be rescued and reunited.

It is the absolute truth - NEVER buy a dog from a pet store. They ALL come from puppy mills where the breeding females are forced to become pregnant as young as 6 months. They then breed them over and over and over. There is inbreeding, no socialization, no medical care and they are kept in crates stacked on top of other crates.

The Amish consider them livestock, just like chickens or cattle. They have forgotten that WE are reponsible for domesticating them, so therefore we are responsible for caring for them.

it is sad to say.. that when I looked up the breeder that our puppy was from.. it was the worst breeder in amish country...thank you!!! Yes..fooled as well into thinking they were a nice family business..too bad people might not see our stories on here. We should stand outside their new bigger and more horrific store in portland. People can say all they want..but they should know the facts on the sadness.. its not always the puppies that are abused although they are sick, it is the poor conditions that they are in for the short time and how the mom and dad are treated still there at the mills...I cry thinking that is where they come from...PORTLAND PETS .. HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT WITH THE LIES YOU TELL YOUR CUSTOMERS?

You are lucky you have healthy dogs, but please dont forget what they have endured getting to you...and that is what the problem is. Love them! As for the owners, just because people have dogs doesn't mean they do what is right in business, and over look what is morally right in order to make their money.

When you buy a puppy from Portland pets you are given ten days to take the dog to a vet,to make sure the puppy is healthy if you don't do this it is your fault. This is done at the pet store owner's expense.Ear mites can be contracted as soon as you put your puppy in the grass and it is very common in dogs. When I bought my Shitzu there the groomer, groomed my puppy before I brought the dog home. They also groom the other puppies in the store on a regular basis, and I thought that that was very professional. It is also very obvious that they take care of there puppies.

I investagated were my puppy came from and it was a local breeder, not a puppy mill like the one you see on opra. you cant belive everything you see on tv.all of the four dogs that the owner has are from her own local breeders.

I live in the area and stopped years ago with my daughter to "look" at the puppies. We were told they were from local breeders by the husband. A day later the wife said they were from out of state. Stopped by today and someone walked in the store with their puppy they had purchased the day before from them. They were returning it because it got vet checked and was told the pup needed surgery.( I don't know what for). It looked like a sick pup. I've been in the pet/animal industry for 30yrs. No matter how much you sugar coat it, these are puppies from mills. Anyone that purchases a dog from a pet store is contributing to mill breeding and the over abundance of shelter dogs. Rescue a dog or research through AKC, go to dog shows, talk to the breeders themselves.

I also have purchased a puppy from Portland Pet Shop and my dog is the best that I have ever had. He is healthy and happy. I have been to many pet stores in the past, but never one as nice as this. Very Clean. The puppies always look so happy and healthy. The owners are so very nice as well. Just like John said you cannot believe everything you hear on tv. There are good people and bad people in business and I know the owners of portland pet shop are good. They truly do care. They even gave me their cell phone numbers and told me to call whenever if I had any questions. These puppies are like their babies. People need to relize that a pet is just like having a newborn. They do get sick, but I trust portland pet shop that they would do the right thing. I will go back there when I want another puppy.

you can get a sick dog from a breader also.doyou beleve that breaders take realy good care of ther dogs? thay are in simular situations as thease so called puppy mills the parents live in cages most of the time like puppy mills.and thay dont get the human contact thay need becouse thay are there to make the breader money.if thay tell you any diffrent thay are not telling the truth and are better at hideing whats realy going on.alot of the time when you get a dog from the shelter your getting a dog thats untrainable, thats why he is there.i bought a very healthy pup from portland pets and would do it again becouse thay take very good care of the pups thay have in there.no matter where thay came from.

Most of the dogs you see in the movies and on TV were former shelter dogs. They are VERY trainable.

I am not talking about housebreaking issues. I am talking about the fact that you don't know what happened to the adult dog before you adopted them. They could have been used in pit fighting or they could be animal or child agressive and calling me stupid just shows your lack of intelligence. You can't tell me all dogs can be trained out of aggressive behavier. My point is you don't know what you are getting when you adopt a adult dog from the shelter.I am however very glad to hear that you have adopted very good dogs from the shelter but it is a chance you take.Thats my opinion and i am entitled to it.I also know you both work at the shelter.
