You bunch of babies! They aren't told that they can go to another company! There is a list of laid off FF in the state and communities will hire from it before going to new lists. The FF can turn down the job if they want but the community wouldn't have to pay to train a new recruit if they take it. It actually saves money and employs the unemployed. I'm sorry they aren't offering FF positions to guys laid off from some private sector union that has no affiliation with the IAFF. That would be like hiring a laid-off Firefighter to drive a tractor trailer even though they don't have a CDL just because both positions are union. Does that make sense to you?

Women are not a minority category for civil service. African american, hispanic, american indian, that's about it. As for vets they deserve preference, at least they did something to earn it. Go to your local recruiter if you want a preference.
