Letters to the editor - Letters

Blame the drivers. Blame the traffic department. If recent letters to these pages are to be believed, pedestrians play no role in pedestrian traffic deaths.

Why should the Health Insurance of 87 % of the Nation be destroyed for those who have no insurance.
It won't be, as you well know. It must be frustrating trying to attack a position
when your only tactic is to lie.

No, it is the fascitsts that are taking over private car companies and now want to take over the health care industry by dictating to people whether they are or not worthy of treatment.
And this is as compared to the good, patriotic Americans who ran the car companies into the ground, dumping their employees in the street (and onto the unemplyment and welfare roles)? Or maybe you mean the good, patriotic Insurance Company execs who "earn" their multimillion dollar bonuses by cancelling the policies of the ill, leaving them to die? Or maybe the good, patriotic Americans like you that think that people who can't afford medical insurance deserve to die? What a sorry excuse for a human being. You should be ashamed.

Right On !
Anyone who has stood downwind of Kilauea's vents, and sometimes even people who live in Honolulu, 250 miles away, know first-hand how these emissions can affect air quality and life on the regional scale. It's a fact that Kilauea has been releasing more than twice the amount of noxious sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) as the single dirtiest power plant on the U.S. mainland.
Carbon dioxide is released when magma rises from the depths of the Earth on its way to the surface. Our studies here at Kilauea show that the eruption discharges between 8,000 and 30,000 metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each day. Actively erupting volcanoes release much more CO2 than sleeping ones do
What a place to measure pollution on top of a mountain dirctly above a active eruption. Geeez go figure that one. You might just as well measure pollution at the top of HECO's Kahe power plants smoke stack.

I'm a big fan of the islands and love to come there regularly.I left Oahu in 1966 (I was 14yo)I remember what TV was avaliable had the local celeb Mr. Lucky Luck, he sold everything from Ajinomoto(MSG)to Primo beer. There was also another celeb: Captain Honolulu a kids show. Where are they now? And my surfing heros who Paul Straugh and Fred Hemmings Jr. both became politicians for the state.Have they done the job they were hired to do. Anyway I loved the old Aloha shirts and some of the posters of those surfing ledgends are hard to find these days. Do you have any insight as to where they can be located? I like to check out your surf report frequently to see where the breaks are best.Thank you for your time, Sincerely Richard

There are many ways to deal with people who can't afford medical insurance than the monstrous plan that is before Congress. My daughter received an operation at Shriners, for example, and that was from a private entity for which my insurance did not pay. But you think it will be better with the government, a government you can't sue and with which you are compelled to do business, when they refuse treatment? Maybe I should be ashamed but you are naive and drinking too much Kool-Aid!

In fact, you should be ashamed. You and your daughter were among the fortunate minority who benefit from the Shriner's generosity, and want to deny help to others who need it. If anything, you ought to be looking for a way to help others to pay back what you have been given.

Naive? Hardly. I can recognize a self-serving SOB when I see one.

If you knew anything about Shriners you would know that they take patients, regardless of income, and treat them free. The only requirements are that you have a condition that they treat (scholiosis in my daughter's case) and that you be under 18 when you are first treated. They even have free lodging for parents who live from far away so they can come with their children. There is no "fortunate minority." If they can help you they will.

And, while you are casting aspersions, I have volunteered time, donated money, and sewn quilts for the hospital to express my thanks for their generosity. My parents have also escorted recovered patients back and forth across the Pacific when it was time for them to return home. How I have in any way denied help to others must be a figment of your own imagination.

What have you done to help? Anything?(or is it better to call people names?)
