This seems to happen a lot. People in vehicles need to learn how to OPEN there eyes. Drivers license and road tests should be more difficult to obtain.
When you see a teenage girl behind a wheel yelling at the top of her lungs, "I can't believe I made it here with out hitting anything," that's when you shake your head..

I know the type of response to expect from you when some fool who drives recklessly hits a pole or tree but you jumped the gun by only reading the headline. The car that exited the parking lot failed to give the right of way to the motorcyclist traveling on Motor Parkway. The motorcyclist is a true victim in this case. I have a brother-in-law with 5 kids who rides, what do you think my opinion of him is?

I'm a female, gradmother whose been riding for 7 years. I dont know if I am getting older (43) or if the people on Long Island are just getting more reckless, but you cant even drive in the slow lane without someone pushing you at 70 mph. Two people I know, seasoned riders, have already been hit this season. I see the troopers on the roads, but the speeding and reckless driving is making me think twice about riding on Long Island. And to the rider that was killed, FLY ON PROUD BIRD YOU'RE FREE AT LAST!

The downside to an exciting and popular sport. Driver's of cars, without realizing it, make a mental calculation of the size and weight of an oncoming motorcycle. they will then make an agressive move in the driving lane of the smaller vehicle confident that if the rider is unable to prevent an accident, HE will be the one to go to the hospital or the morgue, while the driver of the car goes home to dinner and watches TV for the evening. Sorry folks, that's human nature for you, the old "me first" attitude. Would that same driver pull out in front of a giant Mack truck? A safe bet would be NEVER!

when i was a kid i used to ride with my dad all the time. however, this was in the early 70s and a heck of a lot less crowded out here. i absolutely think motorcycles have a right to be on the road, i just think they're crazy to want to ride around LI anymore. its just not safe.

condolences to the family, but don't be too quick to place blame on anyone...accidents are just that...accidents. as long as he wasn't under the influence, people make mistakes all the time. the sun can be awful on parts of motor parkway, the slick road could have been an issue, and sorry, but motorcycles are small and quick and sometimes you just don't see them when you're usually looking for cars to come whipping down the road.

i wish there were some safe open roads for bikes...i miss it, but you can't pay me enough to get on one on LI nowadays.

You're right....LI drivers are getting worse, hence the increasing number of serious accidents we're hearing about every day.

Maybe if you weren't spending so much time wrapping your legs around a big hog, you could have been watching your daughter so she wouldn't be wrapping her legs around big hogs. 43 year old motor cycle riding grandmother. Gimme a break!

Many bikers, especially those who ride crotch rockets, ride way too fast around here. In all probability, you’re correct that the car just lurched out of the lot and the bike hit it. They do that all the time on Long Island. Bikers should know that and slow down when approaching certain areas. Riding around here is a life gambling game. I’m not unfamiliar to the two-wheeled riding situation and know damn well how careful one has to be around here. I’ve been hit myself just sitting at an intersection doing nothing wrong. I do know both sides of riding.
I can only imagine how frequently you yell at your brother-in-law for riding since he has children. If he’s riding on Long Island, he’s nuts and should think of his kids first. I hope he doesn’t become a statistic.
You just can't help yourself, can you? You aren't even man enough to do the right thing and say nothing.

Consider it done, now a word of advice for you and especially your daughter. Do not come back to this board, delete it from the update list. If you have an obituary for your husband, there will be a legacy.com link for condolences. That is where you will find genuine heartfelt support from people you know and people you don't know, but do care. Those people are few and far between on topix. This can be a cruel place, and you do not need that now.

This was a terrible thing that happened. Unfortuneatly it's not the first time and it won't be the last. A few earlier posters said it best. It's an accident, and a lot of factors are involved. Long Island is just not the place for motorcycles. If you love to ride, please just do it out east or in a quiet state.

My condolences go to the family. I have a loved one who rides and I worry every day. I'm sure he was a wonderful man.

Mercury turning retro is offering you the chance to make sweeping and long-lasting changes to your life, and to clear the ground for some fertile growth in 2010. Lawyers and legal matters, debates, contract negotiations, partnership or other alliances, and joint ventures of any kind need attention. As a Cancerian you don't like endings, but you must now bring an end to any situation or relationship that is holding you back or has passed its sell-by date. Look forward, not back, if you want a glittering future.
