My family and I drove down to NC from VA to spend the day. We drove to Cape Hatteras and were returning to Nags Head when we came upon an accident involving a pickup truck and a larger truck. Traffic didn't move for almost 90 minutes. I believe the accident occurred just outside of Rodanthe on the Nags Head side. Does anyone have any information on this accident? We saw the vehicles and fear that there were no survivors. We were all a little shaken afterwards and have thought about the people involved all day. Thanks.

My family and I were leaving Hatteras yesterday morning and were only caught in about 5 minutes of traffic before passing the 4 vehicle accident. We passed by at the same time the first officer on the scene arrived. There was a red pickup, a white caddie, a vehicle pulling a camper trailer and a mini-van involved. Best we could tell as that one of the vehicles was attempting to pass the others. We could see all the occupants of the mini van, including children, standing on the side of the road. There was no one in the red pickup and we couldn't tell about the vehicle pulling the camper. The white caddie had an elderly couple both appeard to be stuck inside, airbags had deployed but had their eyes open and looked dazed. There were several vehicles that had stopped so we didn't not having witnessed the actual accident but were all deeply disturbed by the scene and prayed that everyone was well. By what we could tell, it looked like everyone was ok but obviously are unable to confirm.

My family and I drove past the accident right when the first officer arrived and the first ambulance. We past it before the big backup. It was terrible looking, and we were quite bothered by it, and still am. We had other family members who were stuck in the backup, and they overhead that 2 people were deceased. I am guessing that it may have been the people from the caddilac, because when we were driving by, the EMT's were trying to break the back windows to access the people in the caddillac. I am still trying to find out what happened. My whole drive back to Northern Virginia, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I have a feeling it was a passing gone bad. I wish people would slow down, and realize that whereever they are headed, it's better to arrive in one piece, than not arrive at all.
Please post if anyone hears any more one this!

My son was returning from vacation in Salvo, and came thru after most of accident had been cleared away. He also heard that several people were killed. I tried to read newspapers on line from that area but unable to find out anything.

We we caught in the same traffic tie up! We stopped one of the Deputy Sheriff's that finally drove by us and he reported a five car accident with one fatality. So sad!

We were also caught in the traffic-we turned around and went back for breakfast and waited it out. I've also been thinking about it and wondering what happened.

We happened upon this conversation thread through a friend. We are one of the families that was involved in the accident. We are all thankful that there were no fatalities the day of the accident. However the gentleman driving the cadilac was seriously injured and last we heard was in ICU. I'm not aware if there are any further updates.
Here's what happened: There were three families in our caravan of cars all packed up and ready to head home after a wonderful weeklong vacation. On the way north on 12, the caddilac (heading south) crossed the yellow line and hit all three of our cars, totaling all of them. He hit the red pickup truck first, then a silver SUV, then our minivan head on. There were 6 adults and 5 children under the age of 6 in our group. We were all stranded, but the local volunteers really helped us and we are all very thankful. Although we do not know what caused the caddilac to cross the line, we all continue to pray for the older couple that was hurt.

Oh my, I'm glad you were all ok. It could have been so much worse. Thank you for posting, and the older couple will be in our prayers too.

I wish they would clean up these accidents quicker...it really sucks when you are trying to get to the beach. I have little time to get my vacation in and I have no time for other peoples problems.

You people need to stop with all the complaints. Things happen. Dont complain just because traffic gets held up. People lives depend on the time rescuers put into the accident. So just stop talking about it when you know nothing about it. People dont even have any business coming to hatteras island for vacation. Give us time to repair our island. Just leave us alone and stop thinking about yourself.

DEAR GEORGE W,
GET THE HELL OVER YOURSELF! do you realize how disgustingly selfish and apathetic you sound? you obviously have no regard for others or their well being. i would be MORE than thankful if you did this island a favor and NEVER bothered bringing your dumbass back here! you should have been in that wreck instead of the children or elderly! just sayin!
