hey all...i hate to sound like a selfish asshole... all the obx residents are going through things i can't even imagine. i thought we were going to get hard in nyc, but all we got was some rain and a few trees knocked down in central park. my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

we have a house rented in hattaras the weekend after labor day. my friend who is put this all together has been lacking in communication on whether or not we're going to be able to still head down on 9/10. from my understanding rt 12 is completely destroyed and they're staring to let residents back in on sunday. the only way in is via ferry and obviously residents (and supplies) deserve to get back first to assess damages, etc.

again...please excuse me for sounding selfish, but this is a desperately needed vacation we've been looking forward to since february and i'm pretty sure trip insurance wasn't purchased.

a question for the locals...what are the chances of us making it down there? from the news reports two days ago, i just assumed we were SOL, but the fact that they're letting land owners back in slowly over the week gives me this SLIGHT glimmer of hope. honestly, the only thing i need for a vacation is a beach, a grocery store and a liquor store. hell, i would even be into dedicating a day or two to help local residents clean up in any way possible. seriously...if we make it down and there is a community/volunteer program established please put me to work!!!

again, if this comes off as selfish, i apologize...just looking for some honest (and hopefully optimistic) feedback. thanks!

I would seriously doubt that you're going to be able to go there... We're doing work in Nags Head, and Duck, and I was told by a fellow who owned a house out there that he flew his airplane into the airport there, and they threw a fit.... All he wanted to do was tarp his house, so he doesn't get any further damage. They finally let him after argueing with the national gaurd and Coast Gaurd for 3 hours... Even if the island was opened, the houses have been destroyed really badly. If anyone needs help with their home CMR Roofing has the ability to service large scale amounts of workers to speed up the recovery process. We're the 23rd largest roofing company in the US. We've also put on 3 Extreme Makeover Home Editions roofs. Our creditentials are endless. Just google us and you can see that we have a perfect record with our customers. When you put on 100,000 roofs a year, and you manage to keep your name from getting slandered on the internet these days, then you really know that we are doing something right.

Can anyone at all give us accurate information on the amount of damage on the island.... especially to the homes and cottages ? Not that I doubt the roofer from Greenville, but I had heard that damages were very slight other than the power plant and deep sand over much of the road to the North Point .

Hmmmmm..... I just looked at video coverage of Ocracoke ( see it yourself at
www.wral.com/weather/hurricanes/video/1006102... )

As far as I could see from the aerial footage, there is almost no visible damage at all to any buildings . All I could identify was a few shingles blown off a building that looks like Tradewinds Bait & Tackle.... and a sign in the parking lot was blown over.
Of course this footage will not show any flood damage, if there was any....... but I would seriously doubt the Roofer's statement that "...the houses have been really badly destroyed..." Sounds like he got some bad information from his sources.

Of course you can't see damage from the air! You have to view the DESTRUCTION on ground and see homes that have been flooded and ruined on the inside

Hatteras area of Dare county (from Rodanthe all the way to the end of the island) is completely cut off from civilization. The county is not even considering letting tourists back on until sometime after the 17th. I would suggest trying to get a hold of the company you rented from. Communication with Hatteras area realtors has been rough due to electricity, phone and internet issues. Some companies will forward a letter from you to the homeowner that you are renting from and let you plead your case for a refund. I wouldn't expect one though if you didn't purchase the insurance since homeowners are under no legal obligation to give you one. Sucks I know...even with the insurance I am still looking at an 8 wk wait to get my money back. Good Luck
