I don't see how people survive on those little islands when Hurricanes pass over them. Where do they go for cover? Its not like they can leave so easily. I could not imagine.

They survive. Not as bad as you think. Houses in that area SHOULD be built a little higher to allow for high waves and flooding. People get used to hurricanes brushing up against the coast. What the coast is getting is basically a lil tropical storm. Not the effects of a direct hit of a hurricane. Now the carribean islands that's something different.
