Let the illegal/undocumented immigrants have driving permits that permit them to drive but not full licenses that are used for valid ID purposes.

That would still have them take a driving test to be safe on the road as the police who testified against the repeal say. I mean, they're going to drive anyway. Might as well permit them with some sort of permit.

To me, this is an ID issue. I don't want to have to buy a passport to board an aircraft becasue my NM driver's license is no longer a valid form of ID.

You do understand that many of them dont speak english or read it? So allow them to drive because our do nothing congress refuses to obey the law? NAAAAAA! In fact I think this whole congress should probably be deported with them to where ever, as long as they cant come back. And the illegals should get in line and do it right or dont come back either.

Agree with Carol. They get their drivers license, get on the welfare system and who loses? Us the taxpayers. I know because I m acquainted with three illegals that have done just that and gone back to Mexico because our state is so dumb that they direct deposit their welfare checks. They then can draw their money at any Mexican bank.

How sad.

We should not alow non citizens the rights as if thhe are legal. Here is another ooption when ANY person does not provide Proof of insurance when stopped tth Police impound there vhecile lik ein Dallas. Fills up the impound lots (great sourse of revenue) and gets unisured drivers off the road. thaatwould help on the safty argument. The security argument is going to be tougher one I want my license to e recognized as ID in any Airport in the USA.

What's to debate? They're ILLEGAL! To issue a drivers license to someone here illegally (a criminal) is a crime. Do you think Mexico would issue a U.S. citizen in Mexico illegally a Mexican drivers license? The only think they would issue you is a prisoner number. Unless of course you had the money to pay off the Federales...

I still find it so completely and totally amazing that this is even a question. How can we even consider giving criminals driver's licenses for our state? If they dare come ask for one,the authorities should turn them in to be deported. I don't get it at all. It takes alot of gall to be doing something against the law and ask for the rights of citizenship.

Carol, it's not Congress that's debating. It's the NM (New Mexico USA) State Legislature.

Comprende?

People, their debating and that's reality. There's state representatives and state senators that are making decisions based on political re-election mind sets!

My advice to them is if they want to win the votes and keep NM in compliance with the Fedearl Real ID Act, one solution would be to mandate SOME sort of driving permit but not an actual driver's license.

Leave the actual licenses for legal citizens.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

sorry to tell you, that you will have to buy yourself a passport.
are you not familiar with this?

Within 90 days,(on or about May 11, 2011) all 50 States will be required to provide uniform, biometric, federalized, drivers' licenses, containing personalized GPS tracking chips. This directive from the Obama Administration's Department of Homeland Security, will be implemented through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration [NHTSA]. Your new drivers' license, when you receive it, will be a defacto National ID Card.

I agree,send them ALL back!
I have no need for a maid,Do my own cleaning.
Have no use for a gardener,I take care of my own yards.
No kids...no nanny

Why would I pay some illegal to fix my car when I can do it myself and know it is done correctly.

your reply does not fly.
