Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

The Navajo were raiders, not farmers. Navajo is a misspelling of the Zuni word for enemy - nabahoo.
Not quite altogether true, as early writings indicate many orchards in NM and Arizona with melons, squash, peaches, etc. Many sheep.

Good luck to the gardening project. When I drive across Navajoland, I see many empty farms sitting dormant. When someone goes out to farm it, a self-proclaimed owner steps up and chases the person off. I often scratch my head and wonder if these people have the sense to do something worthwhile with the land (as their ancestors did). I am left with the conclusion that government handouts and subsidy have robbed the people of their ambition. Kudos to these kids who have rediscovered that ambition.
