"Saturday, when the three were hit in the crosswalk by an orange 1975 Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle driven by Gage Stone, 18, a police report states. "

Was the driver talking on his cell phone? I wouldn't be surprized.

It's not jaywalking if they had a green light and were in the crosswalk. Stone said the light was green, the driver is supposed to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Guilty!

I was just driving in the same area and a lady bolted out in front of my car as I was driving along Alameda. I was about 50 feet from even reaching the intersection, and this isn't the first time this has happened. I feel for both the victims and the driver but LCPD should enforce j-walking laws all over town, especially in this area where it is a very common sight.

Does this mean that since the driver didn't have insurance, the police impounded the car? Wasn't mentioned in article

Stone was cited for not having insurance or proof of a driver's license. Does he even have a driver's license to operate the vehicle?

This reminds me of 2 things that we were taught as kids that apparently have no cross over in the real world:
1. Look both ways before you cross the street
2. Don't cut in line

And while this observation is not unique to Las Cruces, I am more than amazed when I see people (particularly in grocery/shopping malls) just step into the street AND NEVER look to see if they are stepping in front of a moving car. As an earlier poster said, the "law" is to yield to pedestrians. However, this twisted entitlement of "they will stop for me" is dangerous.

Second, while driving, the tendency to cut people off, is also indicative of some twisted entitlement hang up is rampant.

The trend of me first, me only, is also bleeding into what has become the "exception" of people using turn/lane change signals.

I will assume that the subject of this article will be deemed a pure accident, however too many people are embarking on behavior that increases the odds that they will suffer grave harm, increasing the chances of an accident.
Just my 2 cents

I could not agree more! This was a horribly tragic accident that could have easily been prevented. A little patience is not too much to ask for. It's one thing to live by the "they will stop for me" motto and endanger your own life but let's try to be a little more careful with our children!

Traffic lights should be red when the walk light is on. There are so many horrific accidents and near accidents when drivers see the green and just go!

If Stone had a green light, the crosswalk sign would have showed stop, not walk. Speed is a mute point because Stone had a green light. This is sad but at the same time, what a dumb*ss for running across the street (with kids in tow) when the crosswalk sign says stop! Geesh!

Stone made the left turn from Three Crosses onto Alameda,
He was making a left turn, which means the sign for people to cross was "Walk". Just because the light is green doesn't mean you can make a left or right turn an not stop for people crossing in a crosswalk!!

I think most people reading the story feel bad for both of the families involved. If not, just put yourself in both the families positions. They've all been in my family's thoughts and prayers since Sat. afternoon. May God bless them all.

This is so sad that these three had to go through this he must have picked up his babies when he saw
that the car was not going to stop for them. So sad. My prayers have gone out for them since I heard this story. I hope the news sun will continue
to update us on this family. Our family wishes them
the best.

That was my brother , niece and nephew. It was proven that they had the crosswalk right away. They got the video from the gas station. NOTHING was done to have stone which was the guy who ran over them!! He even got to drive away w no insurance. He didn't have to pay for nothing!!!! My brother stood disabled and thank God the kids are fine!! Gage stone ruined my families life and we went through so much...!! It must be. Nice to do something like this and get away with it all not even a slap on his wrist. One time I was driving and he was in that same orange vehicle and he was right up my butt!!! Almost hit me obviously he didn't learn'!!! And if he ever reads this I hope ur happy for what you did. And no my brother did NOT jump in front of the car he took most of the impact he tried to Sheild the children.
