It is so sad to hear of that chaplain that killed himself last week. Walden I think is his name?? Wish he could have got help and know that getting caught doesn't mean you have to end it all. Face your mistakes and live another day....

So sorry to hear that one who would listen to the needs of others would not find a way to get past what ever his burden was. All soldiers must know that it is worth the effort to reach out when everything is stealing your hope. www.thesoldiersproject.org My sympathy to his family.

No. This type of investigation would be salacious and would have undermined the relationship the city and the paper needs to keep with the base for economic reasons. For the sake of his family, this is a good policy.

The paper cut ties with the forum we are using here, when there were many replies on other local stories that revealed back stories and opinions that went against the image local leaders want to have made public.

Golly, you exhibit a lack of knowledge, syntax, spelling, and common sense. What's up with THAT?

Ignore Elsie. She has no idea the struggle soldiers go through. If you yourself are a soldier or a vet, you know that many have a hard time transitioning back to living with family.

Soldiers and civilians alike are granted 'magic pills' with the intention of curing depression and PTSD with the idea that they fix things. All patients who agree to take these meds need to be informed of the progression that is likely occur as the brain adjusts its chemical imbalance under the influence of the doses. Patients who are at their lowest emotional depths typically lack the energy to and focus to actually kill themselves.

As a patient takes their prescription, the dark thoughts do not lift immediately, but the patient will have more energy and focus. This period of transition is not properly paired with talk therapy and oversight by the team of doctors tending to the patient. There is a period of time that the soldier or civilian may finally feel they can follow through with their exit strategy before they have found a different perspective on everything that is going wrong with their career, family or apparent loss of a future they had envisioned.

Pair this with a culture of drinking (which many soldiers use as an initial way to forget their problems, when in actuality it makes them feel lower and can interfere with recovery, especially when combined with many meds), geographically distant families who cannot afford to travel out to support their loved one, an unstable upbringing that made the military one of their few options to escape and become independent, etc.

If you would like you can read more about this

No one's story is quite as unique as they fear and there are some better suited for the job of helping soldiers transition than others. If you need the help, you are worth it.
