Dakota County Official Dies After Crash

Created: 06/18/2010 6:13 PM KSTP.com By: Lauren Radomski

An attorney with the Dakota County Attorney's Office has died after a car accident in Hastings.

The State Patrol says 47-year-old Sheila Happe of Apple Valley was hit by a truck after she ran a red light at the intersection of State Highway 55 and General Sieben Drive Thursday afternoon. The driver of the truck, 42-year-old Thomas Munkelwitz of Forest Lake, was not injured.

Happe was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she died Friday afternoon. Authorities said she was not under the influence of alcohol; she was wearing a seatbelt.

I am so sorry for the loss of this woman! We all have made mistakes in life or have not been paying attention at all times! What a horrible consequence! My heart goes out to all family and friends! I am sure she was a remarkable woman, mother, friend and family member! RIP!

Witneses say that she never stopped, never slowed down, actually blew threw a turn late and then through the red light, yep, she was driving reckless. Thank goodness she hit a truck instead of a family of 10 in a mini-van and the cars around that!

It's not easy for either person here. Her family is hurting and I feel badly for the driver of the truck. Even though he didn't cause the accident, he will carry that for the rest of his life.

Hopefully he will get some good therapy and more witnesses will come forward so that the woman's family won't try to sue a poor driver who was obeying the traffic laws.

Thoughts go out to both sides in this situation.
RIP

Yes it is fortunate that no one else was injured & I certainly hope the driver of the truck gets the help he needs... However, the inital state patrol investigation report stated that there were no witnesses. So, unless you were one of the "witnesses" please quit spreading rumors about this poor woman. And yes, I've seen it.

How about we just recognize this as a tragedy, withhold judgment, and mourn the loss?

Is there something we can all learn from this sad event?? Please let us know if her cell phone was in use at the time of the collision. So many of us think we can manage that risk and, most of the time, we can. It's just that the price is so huge on those few occasions when we can't. We need to more fully appreciate the risk and our human fallibility in trying to 'manage' it. Meanwhile, condolences are extended to the grieving family on this sad and devastating event.

<quoted text>What's to sort out? They would'nt have suggested she ran a red light if they weren't fairly sure of it. You did'nt mention anything about the guy that hit her. No he wasn't hurt, but caused him other problems I'm sure. This accident happened because she can't drive.

Shela Happe could drive she was my friends mom, don't say that, she was a very happy person and a joy to be around, I wish she didn't run that red light she was probablly in a hurry to get home, everyone makes mistakes, so don't be so cruel, her family is very sad.

What small-minded, hateful person could post such a thing in the face of two children now without a mother. It was a horrible accident and no one argues that Ms. Happe was at fault but I can only marvel at the person who can callously shake their head in judgement and satisfy themselves that she " got what she deserved" without a moment's recognition of the bigger tragedy here.

Please remember that Sheila has children and a husband that can read all of your hurtful comments. Please keep those children in your mind when posting.

Don't assume that the initial report is the full story. Not all witness hang around waiting for police but that doesn't mean that they didn't give a statement. A road full of people saw what happened and likely have not been listed in the "initial" report.

Don't you think Mrs. Happe's family deserves to know what happened? My heart aches for those kids, her family and friends. And I also feel very badly for the driver (and his company.) I hope he will find peace. No winners in this tragedy!!!

I am sure everyone is thankful that didn't happen. It's bad enough that the truck driver will have to live with what happened. No one knows for sure what caused her to run the red light. It ma have been a medical problem. By all accounts she was an upstanding, responsible person. Let's have a little sympathy for the families involved & stop being so judgemental. Some day it could be your family dealing with something like this

Then you and zing would probably find something callous to say about those kids too. Give it a break already. There is enough heartache for those involved and their families and friends already. Yes, she may have made a mistake that cost her her life. There is no reason to keep hatefully pouring salt on those in mourning.

These same posters would probably also like to see the deceased woman issued a citation. That being said, this is TOPIX, you are ALWAYS going to see hate filled troll posts. Might as well get used to it.

I know someone who was a direct witness. She did not "run" the red light. She was stopped for it. Based on the timing, my friend's best guess is that the right turn green arrow activated and she, like some others I know of, distractedly took it to be the green light for straight ahead traffic and thus went straight ahead on a red light. It could happen to anyone and is a tragedy.
