We skate every week* Live organ music too! Try the Orbit in Palatine or the Aurora Skate rink in Montgomery. It's still the same fun.

Wow seems so long ago that the rink was there me and my sister grew up in melrose park and would go every friday and saturday that is where I learned how to skate. It was the best time of my life I enjoyed going there every weekend, it was sad that they sold it and took it down to put up yet another high price gas station wish it was still there I would of loved to take my nephew's and neice to the place of my childhood.
Kathy, when did you skate at north Ave.. I also lived in Melrose Park and skated competitively between 1978- 1981

I used to skate there competetively in my youth. The Skate club I belonged to in Champaign would drive up to skate in meets. Lots of fond memories about the rink and some of the skaters who's home rink it was. Patty Seipp and her partner Tommy LeVan were very good skaters and treated our club great and always made us feel at hom there. I think her dad was the owner.
Bill, If you get this, find me on facebook.

The old organist wrote:
I was a week-end organist as the Elm for several years and this is a short version of what happened to some of the old skating rink organs.
Hub (Axel) organ: I believe an organ broker acquired the organ. What usually happens is the organs are broken up for parts, i.e. rank here and rank there sold to folks wanting to expand their organs.
North Ave Pipe organ: The original organ in the early years of this rink was a Hammond. In later years, they acquired a pipe organ. I recall seeing information about this organ being moved to a private home somewhere in Wisconsin
Elm organ: That organ was acquired by a broker, again like the Hub, sold for parts. I do know that the choicest ranks are now playing in a pizza parlor in Arizona. The console is controlling a home pipe organ in Marietta GA, and I have the bench.
This is interesting to me since my Dad, Norm was the organist at the Spotlight Roller Rink in La Grange Il for some time.(C1960) As family, we used to get in free to skate on Sunday. Unfortunately, he passed away last fall - but he still liked to play the organ. Years back my Dad and an Uncle actually sold kits to build organs.

Oh the joys of the North Avenue Rollar Rink! My husband and I met there and dated at the rink most of our high school years. Walker Baylor was the organist on the Hammond organ in those days. He used to be a silent movie organist in the years before the "talkies" came in. He was great. As for the Elm, there was a wonderful pipe organ there where my brother-in-law played for several years. He was a member of CATO (a theater organist organzation) and would always work on the pipe organ at the Elm after his session. Another brother-in-law was organist for a while at Spotlight 66 Rollar Rink. The kids today do not realize what they are missing now that all of those wonderful, safe, pleasant places are gone!
All those wonderful places are not gone. I skate twice a week to live organ music. Monday nights at the Aurora Skate Center in Aurora/Montgomery, IL where Frank Pellico plays and Thursday nights at the Orbit Skate Rink in Palatine, IL where Carl DeSanti plays. It's still lots of fun and great exercise!

My parents met at the Riverview, I wouldn't be here were it not for that place. Mom eyed dad and liked his maroon colored button down shirt, she just melted when he asked her to skate and the rest is history.
