Taking issue with 'Lord'

Full story: Berkshire Eagle

The separation of church and state has always been a gray area. The dollar bill carries the phrase "In God We Trust." And the Pledge of Allegiance pronounces America "one nation under God." But a piece of Legislation filed by one Cape Cod lawmaker seeks to erase religion from public documents by striking the phrase "In the Year of Our Lord " from ...

Springer is only making use of his rights, I don't see any extreme liberal agenda in his wish.

I concur with Denis Guyer regarding dominating archaic phrases in our legal documents. It seems to agree with the ancient,( known as B.S,) Belief System,“ Thou Shalt Not Take The Name of the Lord in Vain (or vein, sp.?)
Have you listened to Contemporary Radio or watched Cable TV?
The Berk.Eagle (no relation to me) quoted
[ Denis thus: State Rep. Denis Guyer, D-Dalton, said he doubts his constituents would support such a change.

"I didn't even know there was such a bill. Why do we want to do that? Would we have to reprint all our documents?"
[ State Rep. Denis Guyer, D-Dalton, doubts his constituents would support such a change.
"I didn't even know there was such a bill. Why do we want to do that? Would we have to reprint all our documents?" Guyer asked. "It goes along the same line as having 'God' on our money. I think a majority of Americans support that and I think if you asked people in my district they would say it doesn't bother them. I don't think it's necessary."]

I agree. Example: West Point ( I was too dumb to enter on a scholastic or appointment, and too short and round for an athletic opening ( I played two starting years right guard, line breaker, for Ol’d Dalton High) with a Doormat “WELCOME” across the Blue and White chest-gear when I graduated with a black and blue traditional undergarb of line men.. Tradition is the foundation which great rules build on.

I don’t care for labeling men or women, boxing a fellow American in a corner. I suggest my long life exposes me to understanding Americans turn out to be the greatest of Human Beings, by sharing, not scaring our neighbors, that those today called “Homies” should be Neighbor Homeland Builders no matter what Church, Temple, or Muslim or body, where inside we carry worship and LOVE of and for neighbors.

The Higher the Power the taller stands the beacons of promise for a better life about us all.

If you must, I suggest I am a Gnostic. You may know this, by seeing, not by reading words on paper, while inside my poor old heart, I build a Bill Board ( Pardon Eagle, I meant Headline), of the story I carry.
Open Eyes and Ears, read, with open mind ‘the good that man doth do’. Speak and share, just don’t yap too much ( The curse of the Irish Heritage, being so proud and all, ya’ know
When the Ruling, the early British Colonist understood the Irish coming into Boston and New York could speak a second Language,‘ English’, Hibernians were given prominent jobs, as police, firemen, builders and racketeers).

Therefore, leave well enough alone, adjust to your world with a Godly Heart, flowing with your great LOVE and it will diminish the insane Hate smoldering in the fields about us.

It seems the reporter and our representatives are guilty of not being aware of our history.

God was added to our money and pledge of allegience during the Mccarthy anti-communist hysteria.

it is not part of any heritage any nation would be proud of. He has been proven to have led a witch hunt very short on facts and long on personal obsessions.

There is nothing ultra-liberal about this. It is about respecting our constitution.

Yes, rewriting documents would be a waste of time. Printing new money without reference to a deity and not brainwashing our children into assuming everyone buys into the fairy tale would not be.

In essence, our whole concept of recorded history is centered around the birth and death of a fictional character in a story.
It's unfortunate that everyone agrees with this measure of time. It gives the simple minded the impression that the world didn't exist until 2000 years ago. Current scientific evidence suggest that the earth and the solar system are about 4.6 billion years old.
I prefer to believe in hard evidence and fact rather than a story.
But really, the situation is an epic mess and there's no solution except for the intelligent, educated and knowledge seeking portion of the population to branch off and live life happily ever after with intelligence a top priority.

At least get your facts straight - In God We Trust was first put on US coins in 1864. I don't think Joe McCarthy was around back then.

Phew.

I had no idea. Thanks for clearing this up. What a lot of silly baggage you just unloaded for a lot of us. This is going to free up a lot of Sunday mornings for me too. Thanks again.

Well, "In the Year of Our Lord" is MORE than a bit archaic. That phrase literally hasn't been in common usage for centuries.

To be fair, it is not our concept of recorded history that is centered around "the event," (fictional or otherwise) but our measuring of time. People who want to keep the religious aspect out of our time measurement (AD or BC), generally use Common Era (CE) and Before Common Era (BCE).

It would seem awkward to measure time in the billions of years. There are plenty of other measurements out there currently, but most have some sort of religious basis.

To George- You're right. The Buddhist year (used in Thailand, for example) is 2552, based on the birth of Siddhartha Buddha.

To Derp- The age of the earth is irrelevant, it is the age of the universe that matters. According to Einstein (and others), that is literally when time began. That was 13.7 billion years ago.

Separation of church and state is important to me. It is about respecting the Consitution. Anybody who does not support this, I believe, is not being patriotic. God belongs in the personal and religious sphere, not in government and politics.

I fully agree, religion has no place in government. Americans take the rest of the constitution so seriously (the bit about being able to equip yourself with enough weaponry to take down a small nation) so why not the part where it states the seperation of church and state.

Ben,

No where in our Constitution does it state there is a separation of church and state, simply states the government shall not impose an official religion.

Thomas Jefferson used the phrase separation of church and state in a private letter to a church, but it is not part of our constitution.

can you cite that area of the Constitution that states that?

looks like tolerance ends when you go against liberal ideology. Coexist, except for conservatives and Christians. They have no business in the "premiere cultural resort".

It is an interpretation based on the First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

The first clause in that article has been taken to mean that we cannot pass a law that would favor one religion over another.

If God is removed from American society then no one has to follow ten simple rules. All of man's laws grew out of God's Laws. Remove God, remove all laws.

Maybe I was wrong about it being in the constitution, but you can't argue that Christians and Republicans are discriminated against, there is no segregation, signs outside pubs don't say "no blacks, no Christians, no Irish" the vast majority of congress is Christian you have massive tax relief to money hungry catholic churches. Sorry but an opinion is not the same as discrimination.

Daily Horoscope for December 15

Taurus

Are you in listening mode today? Let's hope so because someone wants to bend your ear and they're hoping that you can spare the time and energy for them. Although your first instincts may tell you to give them plenty of advice, try to stop yourself volunteering it unless it's asked for. Even then, you may get the sense that you're really being asked to listen, not talk.
