I agree with you Bill, like we've been saying for two years, and in that respect, did you read the TOD info on the other post I started and how citizens can get "Block grants" easily?

Harvey is a brilliant diamond in the rough, just waiting to be discovered by the gentrifiers and the resort-makers.

A few key things that need to happen first:

* Dixie Square Mall must be re-open. That place was such a showplace for the world to see. Imagine all the tourists who will come to see "the mall that Jake and Elwood Blues drove through" once it reopens!

* The police department must get rid of the pesky feds. Get em out. They're giving a bad rap to a most ethical and upholding the law department. Let them continue to investigate Chicago instead, or go meddle around in some other suburb, like Kenilworth, Lake Forest, or Highland Park.

* The great Mayor of Harvey must immediately start a PR offensive on the level never before seen. Advertise and extol the virtues of the city on local television and radio. Put "Spend your Vacation in Harvey" ads on the air in tourist markets in Southern Indiana, Northern Kentucky, the New Jersey suburbs, and greater New Orleans. Pool money with other area suburbs such as Gary, Ford Heights, and Country Club Estates to extol the virtues of "ChicagoLandSouth" to those who've never before visited. Point out the convenience to Midway Airport and all of the beautiful points of interest to visit in the area, such as Lake Calumet State Park, the beautiful lighted rock formations at the quarry along the Tri-State tollway, and the lush green hills near the Bishop Ford Expressway. Maybe even make a 40 minute infomercial to run in these markets - that could include small mini-ads from local businesses such as "Moo -n- Oink" that would add a touch of local flavor (or flava?).

Could Harvey get worse?
No, it is rotten to the core.
But maybe you can get Mayor Daley to Annex it into Chicago and then it could be torn down and could be an airport.
Anything would be better than what is there now.

Cess pools, in reality, on an "improvement plan" schedule ARE "Clean Pallets for developers. Take a look at Harvey's "Proposed Development Plan" on the city's website. It's actually very good, and I have overlooked it in the past. Now, granted, the tax assessments for the development areas, may be from 2002 or 2003, but really, Harvey as an investment is fairly a cheap buy. It does offer 1 principal class 1 rail line as well as major inter states. It's just the wrong time to buy, due to the current administration. Now, regarding this discussion, I don't know if you really care about Harvey, or not, but if you have not researched it ,as I have, you really need to back off with the comments and be more constructive. Harvey, by it's very geographical existence, offers nothing but an up-turn in the right hands.

I was born there and raised in Riverdale.
Neither suburb is the class community that it was 40 years ago when I graduated from Thornton Township High School.
We were proud of Harvey, Riverdale and Dolton.
Now CESSPOOL is generous. Harvey is nothing but a disgusting slum.
Have you been there recently?

Yeah Harvey is hurting right now and will continue to hurt unless the citizens get Kellog and those in line with him out which includes police and city govt. Belive it or not but Harvey is the most accessible suburb in USA and when the right person gets in office who really wants to see Harvey for the better then it will only go up.

Yes, "Good Republican", I was just there in the summer. Now, if you seriously read what I wrote, and if you can refrain from getting hung up in social condescending labels,.......as a "good republican" I feel that you should realize the business and corporate value I have just described Harvey possesses. When there is anything in life cannot get much worse, a business man can see an opportunity. Riverdale and Harvey can still stand proud. Have you done anything to try and re-activate Riverdale?

Don't worry about people that call truth what it is.
Very few people that do not have business in Harvey go there.
What have you done to uplift the citizenry of either suburb.
Anxiously awaiting your non-condescending reply.

To answer your question, would take too much copying/pasting. I'm not just saying this either. For over two years, if you will look down the lists under "Ex-Harvey", myself and a few others have been trying diligently to reach key and non-key citizens through various methods which are all listed in these posts. So, far, there have been no organized coalitions to our knowledge through these efforts, but I believe the following has occurred. I believe that the many of citizens who do respond on there and furnish information, have also come to realize that Harvey is well worth saving. In fact, I believe, that through our probing, we have discovered that it is even easier than originally thought to "clean up Harvey" Take a look, and you will also see that Riverdale is also very valuable, and easy to make a difference in as well. It is in an Enterprise Zone as well as close to a class 1 rail line and eligible for TOD funds. Find their "Proposed Development Plan" on their website & tell m what you think. This is the kind of grassroots efforts needed to be made. Ex-citizens and current citizens gaining knowledge of what has been done,or not done, and what can be accomplished and proposed. People taking interest in taking their towns back. " People" will come to Harvey and/or Riverdale if it is re-built.

There are still a lot of good citizens in Harvey and they deserve better. They deserve a police department that will serve the needs of the citizens. Keep the homeless and vagrants from loitering in front of the stores begging for money, stop the gang bangers from loitering on the corners, aggressively eliminate the ongoing prostitution, stop the drug dealing.. Could this be done, YES IT CAN. Remember back in the 90's when there was good officers who cared about the city. They went out and did a great job. They did a great job until Kellogg and his crew (Askew, Wells, Keel, ETC) ran them out of the department. They wanted the honest officers gone so no one would be able to question anything they did.

153 Dixie you are right. I hope with the feds in the p.d. they will connect kellogg and others with a charge. They all need to go so Harvey can repair.
