Walkway Over the Hudson will sponsor a bicycle tour from Poughkeepsie to New
York City on Saturday, June 23, 2007. The purpose of the tour to is to promote Walkway’s
mission to convert the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge into a pedestrian walkway and
The ride will start at the Civic Center Plaza on Market Street in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. at
8:00 a.m. and finish at Battery Park in New York City at approximately 6:00 p.m. The distance
is either 91 miles as a direct ride, or an even “century”(100 miles) if cyclists elect to lap Central
Park. The route takes the riders across the Mid-Hudson Bridge, along the west side of the
Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge and then along the east side of the Hudson River
to Battery Park. The pace will be moderate - there are rolling hills for portions of the ride but
other portions are along level roads adjacent to the Hudson River. It is a scenic tour of the
Hudson River Valley, not a race. Shorter options are available for those interested in riding only
a portion of the route.
On the day of the event, all riders will be provided with detailed cue sheets and maps of
the route. Support vehicles will travel in front of and behind the cyclists with water and snacks.
After the ride, a celebration will be held in New York City, after which riders and their bikes
will receive return transportation back to Poughkeepsie. All riders will also be given a T-shirt
commemorating the event.
Cyclists may either pay an entry fee or they can solicit donations from friends or
neighbors in lieu of paying the entry fee themselves. All proceeds will benefit Walkway Over
the Hudson, a non-profit organization. Prospective participants may obtain registration forms at
Walkway’s website www.walkway.org
or by contacting ride coordinator, Fred Schaeffer, at
, or via e-mail at FredinHV@aol.com .
