Check out Outback Therapeutic Expedition. My daughter went there seven or eight years ago and it saved her life. The administration has changed since her time, so check it out carefully, but it was a positive life-changing experience for her. For the whole family, really. At that time there was no punishment, no brainwashing, just well trained and compassionate staff who made weekly contact with family. We were also able to exchange letters with out daughter twice a week.(Some programs prohibit regular communication with home.) In those conditions, the wilderness can work wonders. We also had a short experience with Hyde. I would advise you to avoid it. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call it cult-like.

not all of them are like that. I was forced to go there years ago and didnt have "challenges" but the kids get treated poorly by unqualified idiots

No surprise here! The Hyde School is nothing more than an "Alternative School" for afluent parents who want to send their behaviorally challenged, arrogant, spoiled children far, far away....... A prep school it is not! These are NOT the type of children you want little Sally Sue and Billy Joe bringing home for supper any time soon! They may find a way to make an explosive out of the entre or try smoking the veggies!

Hyde was the best thing that ever happened to our family. Each and every one of us.
We travelled fro the UK to Hyde. I wish we had schools like this in the UK.

Thank God for the Hyde Schools.
If you have never been there, and are not a member of the Hyde community, I can understand why you might view the school and its mission with suspicion. It is a very different kind of school, with a focus on character and accountability for kids and their families.
HThis is not a spoiled affluent place to dump your difficult children. It is not a place where you drop them off and write a check, like getting your car fixed. Hyde requires a huge commitment from the families. The student's entire family participates in family education, and each parent is on campus for several days at a time, at least 3 times a year. During that time, everone is involved in very helpful and often life changing family education workshops.
I know this from experience, not just a bias aroused by a news story. My son was at Hyde School, and in the first year, my husband and I spent a total of 50 days either on campus or at Hyde parents' educational meetings sand other events.
The Hyde kids are absolutely wonderful. The difference between them and the kids acting out back home is that they and their parents are working on improving their character and being accountable for their actions. These are not children, they are young men and women who are self aware and committed to a high standard of conduct. I am proud to know them.
When I attended hyde I was blown away by mean the kids were. They shoved me, harassed me, made me do push-ups for brushing my teeth toolstr, stood in my room with the lights on because I had a "bad attitude" cause I was sleepy, and wouldn't do the dorm workout they wanted us all to do. Though I'm very successful now, and going to a top 25 law school, hyde certainly didn't help me get to where I am now. My GPA at Hyde was a whole letter grade lower than it was after I left. They made me miss my final exam because one of the thugs on scholarship thought he could kick me off a computer by twisting my wrists until I got up. I punched him in the balls. I didn't get my study guide printed, and was told I should have found an alternative solution. Thus, I missed 4 finals exams after being out on 2/4

THe facility aren't trained either, and are very unhelpful. I just wish I'd gotten out of there sooner and stood up for myself more while I was there. It really says something that 6 years later at 4am I can't sleep because memories of abuse and harassment while at Hyde keep coming back..

I attended the Hyde school during the early years. Joe Gauld, the founder, is a dim bulb bully with very questionable credentials. He used his rich mother-in-law's money to get started after he was fired from Berwick.
The students were never encouraged to blossom. They were beaten down. Joe set up a proctor system which controlled the students by ratting on each other. The entire control system was based on intimidation.
Academically, the school is way overpriced and second rate. Check out where their graduates go to college. Also, check out the SAT scores. LOUSY!!!!!
Hyde has never been able to build any sort of alumni organization. How come?
I'd never send one of my kids there. The Gauld family are basically a bunch of users.
