I staeted lisinpril htz 20mg feb. 2009 I got a rash on my neck and face when I went outside in the sun, the doctor put me on straight lisinpril 20mg. I had back surgery in june It has been very hard trying to heal my back gets very sore when I get coughing I am thinking very serously about quiting all the meds since the side effects are worse than what it is treating I guess I'll take my chances and try something else natural excersize trying to relax to relieve the stress that causes high blood pressure . I do believe that stress and what we eat (processed and fast food) is the major cause of most high blood pressure. Get in touch with who you are, and take control of your life I sure am going to try very hard

Read that the _____prils can affect your zinc and iron levels, that the lack of iron could cause coughing, and that adding back the iron (not at the same time, and only if you are low in iron) can reduce the cough by over 40%.

My cough has finally stopped and I am still trying to find a drug that works to control my BP with few side effects. I hope you get better soon and I know exactly how you feel.

So, Gail, what did you take instead? I've been coughing for years on hydrochlorothiazide.

I was taking lisinopril and had the same violent coughing, i stopped taking it 12 days ago. The coughing has almost stopped but still once or twice a day it happens. I'm a patient care person and its really hard to see patients and cough until you gag or worse. I feel for ya Tyra. the problem with blood pressure meds that make you cough is the Ace Inhibitor in the med. you want a bata blocker.

my husband developed a horrible cough after taking lisinopril. the doctor changed it to amlodipine which caused him a terrible rash that the doctor said was not caused by the medication. he is miserable, now he stills has the cough and a rash to go with it. this doctor prescribed 2 nasal sprays and 2 different inhalers plus lunesta causing us to dish out a lot of money when it all started with the blood pressure medication. of course his blood pressure is high, he can't sleep because of horrible cough. monday he is seeing a new doctor in hopes of getting better. i can definitely relate to all of you.

I have been taking blood pressure & cholesterol pills for years and have this persistant cough that will not go away, no matter what I do - can it be due to the blood pressure medication or my cholesterol one? I am taking generic forms, not the brand names... Please advise since this cough is very annoying and it's also very disruptive. Thank you for your help.

I have been on 3 different medications for blood pressure, Toprol, Norcasce and Benicar plus Atenorol. The first one made me so dizzy I couldn't even walk, the second I had a horrible allergic reaction to it and the benicar and atenorol have affected my ashtma something horrible plus I have a horrible cough. Is there any medication out there that I can take for Blood Pressure that will not affect my asthma and will not make me cough day and night??????? I'm desperate. I'm 66 and I know I need to be on medication but I'm having a time with this.

I am on two BP meds and have been for almost three years. Since losing insurance the Atenorol was only $4 but the Diovan was $156. They changed it to one beginning with an E at 20 mg. and I began to cough and have coughed now for seven weeks. Being older this also causes me bladder problems and I got the flu with this for three weeks. It feels like a drop of water continually filling my bronical tubes. So I stopped it and now I am being told there is nothing else for me to take since Diovan is so expensive. What do I do ? They always ignore you or scare you to death about things. The last med I had that was bad was also a BP and my BP went up really high in 20 minutes of taking it and I got hives. The ER had nothing to offer in counteracting this. They said to wait and it would go down or have a heart attack. I went home, took two spoons of charcoal and a large glass of water, in 15 minutes I vomited my BP went to normal and the hives went away in an hour. What even happened before all these man made drugs ? And what happened to holistic thinking when working with patients problems.

I have taken Atenolol 50 mg daily and hydrocholathiazide 25 mg daily for over 25 years and my blood pressure was fine (AT HOME) but, when I went to the doctor it would be about 160/90 (white coat syndrone) I went to a new Cardiologist and he took me off the Atenolol and put me on Lisinopril 10 mg daily, and I was so dizzy I could not walk. After 10 days of no improvement he put me back on Atenolol and kept me on the Lisinopril too. A month later I started coughing, then it got so bad that I was gagging and threw up several time.(I read where the side effects were coughing)
after 6 months I was still coughing bad. but, did not get off because I thought it would go away, and also because he said that there was "no other B/P med that was generic". Finally after one year of coughing my inside out, I finally told him "I have to get off Lisinopril I can't take this coughing anymore.
He has ordered Amlodipine 5 mg daily. but, I see where it caused a rash! and it is very expensive, but, supposed to go generic next year.

I have been on "5" different BP medications and they all have had horrible side effects, mostly the coughing and asthma, I have asthma and the medicine really makes it a lot worse. I am at my wits end, take the med and be sick all the time or try to get off of it and have high blood pressure. I am about ready to get off of it and just try to lose weight and excercise when I can and see what happens. I know I need the medication but when you are sick all the time is it really worth it????? I'm glad to know that I am not the only one in this country that has a problem with medications, sometimes I feel like I am the only one that can't take medicine without horrible side effects.........

After SEVERAL different BP meds my doc finally put me on Norvasc, starting at 5 mg but now at 10 mg. The other meds caused coughing which interrupted whatever I was doing: talking, driving, walking, etc. It was awful. I've read up on Norvasc and one feature I've found is that after a few years many of the patients on Norvasc also have to add an additional BP med --- but I'd rather take two that are NOT ace inhibitors than cough all the time. Best to all!

I have seen the doctor again and now she is wanting me to try toprol which is what I started with in the frist place. She said the dizziness may have been caused by a drop in blood pressure or it could be the medication. I have tried just about everything out there so pray for me. If I can't take this I am going to concentrate on losing weight and excercise..the problem with the excercise is I am still in the work force and don't get home until after 6:00 p.m. and I just can't do it in the mornings...I have had a violent cough from the other medications and my asthma has been "horrible".......I hate that so many people are having these problems but it's nice to know that I am not by myself.....My two daughters take BP med and they have no problems at all so it is very very frustrating for me. I take cholesterol med and I seem to tolerate it pretty well but this BP med is really bad. Good Luck to everyone out there that is having a problem with these side effects...I will pray for all of us.

****You probably want a beta-blocker, NOT an ace inhibitor. Ace Inhibitors cause the cough. I'm not familiar with Toprol but you could look it up online. I tried to lose weight but found out I have thyroid problems. I'm going to see an endocrinologist & am going to ask him about BP meds also. TELL the doc you don't want an ace inhibitor.

Hi Tyra:
I also developed a chronic cough as a result of taking Lisinopril. I have only been taking it for a month and the cough is wicked. I could not sleep and would start coughing during meetings. It has been two days since I quite taking them and I am still coughing. I agree they should take this drug on the market. I hope your cough goes away sooner.

After suffering all summer and early fall I am now cough free but as a result I have developed asthma. I pray that your cough does not last as long as my cough.

PLEASE ask your doc for a beta blocker, NOT an ace inhibitor. The ace inhibitors cause the cough. Best of luck!

Thanks so much for all the info. I've been coughing for years and was suspicious of my HBP med Norvasc. Of course my now ex-doctor had to treat me for post nasal drip, allergies, asthma, and acid reflux.
Now I'll ask my new doc for a beta blocker. Thanks again.
