Could The State Have Kept Inmate Kevin Cales Alive?

Was the prison killing of inmate Kevin Cales preventable? Prison officials say they didn't know Cales had a connection to Waldemar Rivera - who is charged with stomping Cales to death to avenge his cousin's ... Full Story

How would investigators or Corrections officers know which prisoners have ongoing feuds with each other? If such a process were in place, how could it be enforced? When a prisoner is being booked on say, murder charges, this person isn't going to be exactly forthcoming about who he/she knows who's already in the corrections system. It's probably the furthest thing from their mind at that point.
And I don't want my tax dollars spent on hiring an additional 100 DOC employees to investigate if the inmates' victims mother's sister's second cousin's son is also incarcerated. How in depth do you want DOC to go and WHO CARES? It's all self reported by the inmates anyway (we all know inmates don't lie) and DOC doesn't want their police reports or transcripts to actually see who the victim is! But in their defense, how would Cales know that the other loser was related to the victims? It's his fault for not reporting that he was threatened! Justice served.

My question on the intake: Who was your victim? That is it. The victim is the only person that needs to be seperated from the scumbags. Inmates are on their own after that, and it's their fault if they don't report a threat.

Here is a message to all you wannabe criminals. Prison isn't nice, it is dangerous!

I have no fear of being killed in prison. Why, you ask... because I am not going to break the law, and get into prison in the first place.

The reason they waste their time on it is because of the hate-filled and racist comments that will abound. FYI Topix is a California corporation.

Typical liberal BS. The "state" is responsible for everything and should run everyone's life right down to the last detail. No sense of personal responsibility. No wonder this paper is failing.

The guards should let the inmates fight more. Maybe more will die and will decrease our taxes. Nobody will miss Cales or Rivera. They are both pieces of sh it...

Here's a thought... Why don't we arm all the prisoners and let them have at each other. With any luck, it would reduce the prison population and save the taxpayers some money in the long run. Do I sound cold and heartless?? Perhaps, but I don't know a lot of people that would get in line to mourn the loss!
You sound like a sociopath yourself. Did you know there are people in prison for minor crimes? Did you know some people who get wrongly convicted? The Courant should shut down these forums as they are simply a breeding ground of hate and ill will. What happened to Cales was vigilante violence and is wrong, plain and simple. It's wrong not just among "liberal tree huggers," it's wrong in the eyes of the LAW. People who say otherwise have criminal tendencies themselves.

I don't even know why the Courant spent time on this piece. Cales is gone. It's over. Theonly sympathy the paper should be giving out is to his victims.

Help solve a cold case.

have you seen the pictures of these men. They aren't white. This has nothing to do with race at all. Stop pulling the poor black man card. I'm personally sick of it. If all the blacks go out get jobs and be productive men of society then no one would have anything to talk about right? The reasoning for the talk is because of the crime that so many minorities commit. Not because wre picking on them. I have black friends that work and are good members of society. It's not all blacks just like it's not all whites that do the molesting etc. It's just a big part of our race.
Wait a second, I'm white, are you saying I should be molesting people??

it was the girl who drove into the tree at 120 mph, apparently in fear for her life. But it took the other guy less than a minute to stomp his brains out, so cales couldn't have been that much of a bad a$$.

We should applaud the state of Ct and the Dept of Corrections. This is the best story Ive seen in a while. So many other things of interest going on in the world and the Hartford Courant thinks we care about these two pieces of human garbage. Not one person on this post gives a shit about these two punks or your god damn editorial. you suck ! Now if we could rip the balls off the other inmate we can prevent him from contaminating the rest of the world.

You criticize the harsh tone of some of the comments regarding the death of Mr. Cales. Fine, you are certainly entitled to your opinion in the matter; and I happen to agree that some comments are overboard. But then you go on to urge the Courant to shut down the forum wherein the public can voice its opinion on issues in the news. A typical fascist response to free speech and the opinions one disagrees with.

Cales killed people. On purpose. And was convicted in court of having done so. That being in prison for it exposed him to people who would exact revenge on him for it, is not the state's problem, it's his own. The idea that the state not only must feed, clothe, and house an animal-like sociopath for life, but also protect him from the consequences of his own sociopathy, is ridiculous. Cales was a sociopath, and died a death appropriate to such a person ... at the hands of another sociopath, because of what he did.

The world is a far better place without Cales in it. Perhaps if more prison killings occurred, going to prison might actually be more of a deterrent than it is at the moment.

Q: How do you avoid getting stomped to death in prison?

A: Don't do things that will get you sentenced to prison!

Doesn't take a PhD to figure that out....
