This guy is slime. He enjoys living on a bluff in the sound in Westbrook but has a hard time paying people who've done work for him. I don't get it...how can people like him sleep @ night and look at themselves in the mirror each morning? As always, what goes around comes around.

Typical of many, if not most, of the 'players' in the Hartford region. A testament to why Hartford is where it is at, with regard to lack of growth, substance and future. Where is the soul?

I am in the publishing business and have been successfully publishing college and hospital directories and daily planners in CT for the past 18 years. I have never even considered not paying my vendors, as they are very important and can help make or break you. What Mr. Guinan has done is basically had these vendors pay for his lifestyle, which is indefensible.

Mike and I were both 40 under 40 winners in The Hartford Business Journal, a piece put out by the paper to promote "rising stars" in the Greater Hartford area. Not a real important piece of journalism, but mostly has people in it who are doing well in business.

I was nominated for my work on creating a publishing company (Campus Yellow Pages) from scratch, which has been successful enough that I have been able to provide for myself and family and my employees. I do not attend media events and like to keep a low profile.

Mike got nominated for Marketing Resources which was basically just a failing business with a high profile owner, From the day I met him, I felt that Mike was in over his head. He tried to get me to partner with him, and I am thankful that the people over at the Hartford Advocate at the time talked me out of it.

In closing, Mike is not evil, he is just not a business man and likes to live beyond his means.

Great article! from what i hear, he bartered all of his advertising, and let customers write their own reviews on their businesses. journalism? nah.

Just got my latest copy of the magazine in the mail yesterday.

It really sucks.

And a couple of those most eligible singles were downright nasty.

Ick!

1.) Hartford Magazine sucked. Read Los Angeles Magazine, Chicago, and (yes) Cleveland Magazine if you want to see a big splashy expose of a city and its people. This magazine looked like something the high school senior journalism class did.
2.) I am sad these people aren't collecting monies owed to them. If, however, the amounts are as small as $3,400, a creditor for that sum has to wonder if they won't spend more time and money collecting that sum than it is worth.
3.) The sad part is this publisher will be given anothe rbreak some time and continue partying and entertaining with the business' profits while forgetting to pay his business expenses.

You gotta love Hartford Magazine. Looks like he ran out of UConn Coaches, News Casters, and Crooked Politicians to feature. Oh wait, we have celebrity relatives, but few and far between.

Bluff, yes. But, not in Westbrook.
The timing and motives of the Hartford Courant's article focusing on the continually improving status Michael Guinan's media company are suspect. That the article was printed on the morning of Connecticut's most popular Winter event, Sun WineFest, which Guinan launched and continues to produce, is beyond cynical. It was extremely awkward to see the Hartford Courant booth at the event, complete with a stack of the paper carrying the article. More so were the Courant.com banners hanging throughout the exhibit hall. Someone at the Hartford Courant clearly has issues with Mr. Guinan's success. He has diligently worked to lift the entire condition of all Hartford’s businesses, especially those who work with him as vendors. I truly wish the same could be said for the Hartford Courant. As a business owner who has worked with him for years, and been paid every time, I find the article an undeserved character assassination on one of Hartford's leading and most consistent proponents. Michael Guinan has always been and remains a powerful asset to the city, for businesses and charitable organizations. Finally, their attempt at insulting Mr. Guinan by citing that his "residence stands on a bluff" in Westbrook is laughable. There are no bluffs in Westbrook, or anywhere of note along the Connecticut shoreline. The editors of the Courant should limit their reporting to reality, rather than trying to bluff us all.

I remember this magazine guy being interviewed by broadcasting legend Al Terzi, and he dropped the bombshell they were considering an issue on Hartford's best doctors. The beloved Terzi exclaimed, "Wow," possibly unaware every city magazine in the country did that idea already.

It amazed me how many advertisers Guinan sucked into his schemes. He is so clearly a hustler and a fraud. As for Hartford Magazine, it's not about readers and it never was. It's about cross-promotion and not offending anyone. I don't think there's ever been a single story in it that was really worth reading.

a lot of hate out there people!

if you can't see a guy like Mike coming, you're a moron. the fact that it took the Courant about a decade to write the story is the ridiculous part.

I too was a freelancer for one of Guinan's publications and called daily to get payment after failure to pay after 90 days which became their method of payment. I eventually left messages on almost everyone at the businesses voicemail making my claim and left daily messages for Guinan. I was eventually paid half the money then after further phone calls I received all but $50 of the money owed. I am still owed that money but at this point want nothing more to do with him and his publications. I have never been treated that way in my 20 plus years of freelancing.

"Certainly, by this time next year, we won't have any what I'd consider past-due invoices."

Past due is past due, numbnuts.

"He declined to name the assets he has pledged. Property records show his wife as the sole owner of their Westbrook home."

Probably the car and a used stairmaster.

Shiny Porsche?$54,000.
Stiffing your freelancers?$150,000.
Hiding your assets in your wife's name? Priceless.

Wanna bet the half of the creditors he "paid down" (which is not the same as"paid") are the half that he owed a few hundred to?

Hartford Magazine has always been a self-congratulatory fishwrap. Here's hoping White makes something of it.

It's people like Michael Guinan that make it harder for small businesses to succeed in the area. With no concerns for anyone else but his own gain he is the perfect example of someone who should be thrown in jail for fraud and have all his shiny toys taken away, but unfortunately that won't happen because he's slimy smart to know not to have anything of value in his name.
One can only hope that karma gets him as hes stepping off a busy street corner

How does one collect from this man? I am photographer and I am joining with another writer who has not been paid. Can we go to the state level re: business practices. He is arguably unethical. We can file in small claims court? Debt collector? Anybody have suggestions?
