It's a shame Moe and Larry couldn't communicate with Curly at this tragic event. Mary Fletcher should've been escorting Lavery down the staircase (in the lead), when they attempted to apprehend the loser! Everyone seems to have let Peter down (D.O.C, probation department, his colleagues...), and now, others are benefiting from his loss. His attorney: "Another large portion of the settlement was swallowed by attorney's fees, though Bergenn said that as a courtesy to Lavery his firm retained less than a typical one-third"...gee, what a guy this Bergenn is. Even Fletcher, who I understand, successfully sued for having her basement ruined?! What a world we live in. Vultures are everywhere. R.I.P. Peter Lavery; you're better off now.

This so wrong on so many levels. I feel sorry for the family of the deceased, however, I do not feel the town or the police should have been held financially liable in this case. As a police officer, it is understood that you may, just like military personnel, be placed into a position where your life, or the life of someone else may be in danger and it is your job to respond. Likewise, in either uniform, there is always someone else out there that wants to see you dead. - it's a part of the job and we all know it.

Fletcher should have been charged with Accesory to Murder. The guns, ammo and bullet making machine were right in the open next to the washer and dryer. Minutes after the shooting Officer McDermott asked Flether repeatedly if their were guns in the home and she repeatedly said no. All that Fletcher repeatedly said was, "They(the police) better not hurt my dog." He worked at Colt he was a gun fanatic, Fletcher knew this. Now it is well known in town that she has a new boyfriend who has taken her side. Recent Rumors are heard that Fletcher faults Lavery for the incident. Her new boyfriend knows of the whole incident and continues to date her and take her on his motorcycle....amazing. Do the town a favor Flether and move or least stop shooting your mouth off to everyone about the incident.

She had a restraining order against him and still allowed him to live with her. She knew what he was capable of and did not care. She knew about the guns and leid to the police.

If she was black, she would have been charged, we all know that. Why is that guy dating her? Hmmm. I can think of a few million reasons! She's laughing all the way to the bank!

Had the system not failed Officer Lavery as it did, there is a good chance he might be alive today. Perhaps it took legal action to bring the failures out in the open.

I went to school with Lavery hate to say it but he walked right in to it! Newington is a diffent town now, he should of knew that. The kind of scum running around town is scary.I have my gaurd up now, years ago we never had to even Peter should of known that. May it be a warning to all the good people of Ngtn, Its not a safe little burb anymore. Its a shame for all of us. Just sit on the pike and look at the people comming into the town and ask yourself if they look like trouble or not. Just sit and watch! Now we have alot of young cops that are clueless not to mention are a danger to the very people they are supposed to protect. Someone at the PD has made some poor choices! The reckless driving by these new kids on the force is going to kill someone! Slow down before you take out a kid testing out your new Hemi on side streets. I see it all to much its going to bite ya...

It is truly a shame that only out of a tragedy can effective improvements be made in law enforcement agencies. The Danbury area still has no means of interoperable police communications. Are we going to wait for another tragedy?
Rest is Peace Master PO Lavery, rest in peace.

Mary Fletcher absolutely should have shared legal and financial consequences for what happened in her home.

Geeez, the way I read the story, the town and the police weren't held responsible.. the state and the probation department and the 'germs' girl friend were held responsible....did I read it wrong? Read it again...the "police" were NOT sued, neither was "the town"..

How wonderful of you, in response to this kind of article, to refer to the police as "Curly and Moe and Larry".... You Sir (or maybe madam) fall far short of being a CLASS ACT......In fact, you fall short of having "Class" period....

Find out the facts;which he was no able to do because the Probation Department dropped the ball and Fletcher lied about guns being in the house. What the hell do you know about police tactics anyway?. He went to arrest someone on a simple assault who unknown to him had a fully automatic M-16 and was lying in wait. Maybe you should date Fletcher than that other new bozo GEO.

I guess according to your dim brain since the Police should have known better that they should not do anything. I guess that is what you must be saying. Since they are mind readers and know when someone is going to snap and build a fully automatic rifle and shoot them. They know this even when the scumbag girlfriend says there are no weapons right. I now stand with GEO and do declare that from now on anyone making a complaint must come to the Police station and the Police will call the bad guys on the phone and tell them to come into the station because the Police know better now. This will be much safer for the Police.

I disagree. Maybe its time for everyone that was a victim of a convicted felon who is Out of prison on "parole" to sue the state. Bet that would stir up this stupid judicial system we have. Thats what simpletones do trying to demean people if they dont agree with their train of taught, every time I see a cop pulling someone on the road automatically he calls for help. That cop in Newington knew that the house was baricated by a crazed man(ex correctional officer hence guns in the house)yet he went in on his OWN on the assumption that he will save the day by himself(sole hero).Thats my point just like the neglegance on the part of Chesire police when it come to that double murder. The teller called Cheshire PD that female with a strange looking male came in and withdrew 10K the mother which was killed alerted the teller does it matter effect that she's been robbed, yet the cops did not called the doctors work did not drive by his house just to check things out(prehaps if the robbers saw police car around......well we can only speculate...)I wonder how you going do debased me now,by the way I work for ACLU CT chapter Im a lawer ;)
