Former employee of American Honda USA who was responsible for managing transmission inventory for Acura transmission failures. I am the original owner of a 2000 Acura TL with 108k miles. The vehicle did fall within recall parameters and had the update when vehicle had 56K miles which only prolonged trans slipping/failure for another 50k miles...Honda/Acura really need to step up especially when owner is able to provide invoices of routine scheduled services and I maintained my vehicle religiously.
I'm looking to buy a Audi A4 Quattro 2003 or a Acura TL, but im scared cuz of the TL tranny problem. Do the 2004-2007 Acura Tl have transmission problems as often as their previous generation ? and ive heard that the manual Acura TL doesn't have transmission problems is that true ?

Have an 04 TL with automatic that has 261k on it and am just having first trans issue. Feel lucky compared to the stories I am reading here. Looking for a reasonably priced rebuild trans source. Any help will be appreciated.

My 2003 Acura TL has had 3 transmissions. The first was replaced on a recall. That one,after a fight, was replaced with me paying for the labour and they supplied the parts. Now the third one is going and I am on my own for it. Each one seems to last about 3 years. The car only has 170,000 km (107,000 miles)Car in great condition except for the transmission.

Ok I need to have something clarified.

Ive seen numerous references to both PCM and at the same time ECM. are you guys talking about the same thing and making typos, using wrong terminology, or are they separate things that need changing?

Some also referred to their computer changed. Or that changing ECU should be part of the repairs. Why?

Bought a 2002 TL S off ebay in 2006 with 95k miles. Before I bought it I called Acura warranty and they informed me they had replaced the trany at 50k. At 96k trany went out and Acura paid 100% of new trany. I use synthetic and change the oil every 35k ever since. I have put 215k on this trany with absolutely no problems. Love the car!!!! At 315k drives and looks like new.
Also have a 2006 TL my wife drives had the original trany pulled at 195k and had new clutches put in it.($2,000) It looked new except for the clutch material sluffing. ONLY USE SYNTHETYIC and CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 35K. Drive hard and maintain!!!

My transmission problems started yesterday and it became apparent that I was trouble .Iwas able to get the car- Acura 2003 TL- into a parking space where it was towed to a dealer. Estimate for transmission including iinstallation,$5,000. I will have it done but it's killing me to do it as the car is 10 years old. I have maintained this car through dealer service and followed all recomendations. Am I crazy to pay this price? I would not be comfortable going to an unknown non Acura transmission dealer so I feel stuck with this high price. I will say that with 125,000 miles this has been the only problem that I have had.
Any thoughts, fellow Acura owners?

I have a 2002 Acura 2002 with 5 speed automatic transmission. Car has 102,000 miles and am the original owner. The vehicle occasionally "neutralizes" when driven and is in 5th gear. I manually shift to 4th gear position it drives fine and also in 5th gear when shifted manually. Dealer tells me it needs solenoids, cost $1000 and if that does not do it,$4000 for rebuilt. Car is not worth the repair. Any opinions on the cause of the problem.

If you're so broke, why do you drive an Acura? I hate people that spend their last dollar on a car they can't/barely afford, but a base accord next time lady!!!

I figured since I spent the time to read all 245 posts I should leave my story, too. I bought a 2001 TL off lease from a dealer in 2004 at ~45k mi. Certfied pre-owned warranty was 12 mo/12k miles, and when I got to ~14 months and 25k mi, the original tranny was replaced thankfully under the extended recall/warranty in effect at that time. Just hit 182k mi on that replacement and I count myself lucky...I've been waiting for this to happen but praying for more time. I've got a new power steering pump but blown power steering lines, catalytic converter failure, but otherwise this has been a reliable and fun car. Not worth the $4500 now especially when I just found a 1999 on Craigslist for blue book $1600 171k mi. I'll take my chances with this as many of my good parts (like headlamp assys/starters, and caliper/rotors) from the 2001 will be useable on the 1999. I used to aspire to purchasing a certified pre-owned 2010 TL but I'm moving on to the Hyandai Genesis 5.0 RSpec 475HP V8!!

PCM = powertrain control module

ECM = engine management system

ECU = electronic control unit

I have just joined the ranks of the disabled ! but I have been very fortunate my 2002 TL crapped out right by work, and I had a few mechanics there confirm my issue, and my car is slipping like crazy soon as it heats up, I like most of you have a mint car, minus a trans problem, so think about this, if you have spent thousands to maintain your car and replaced all the things that wear out, is it smarter to spend 3500-4900 to get your car back on the road ? or do you assume a new payment, and new headaches ?, If I put the money in I still end up with a better car than one you can find for 5000, plus taxes,dealer fee, plate transfer, and upgraded insurance. it all adds up, so quit crying people, I knew what the issues were with these cars when I gambled and bought it at 152000 5 years ago, other than my new problem I laugh at what crap people drive, people are amazed to feel a Honda/Acura drive at 260k, thats what I experience, as they drive 75k jalopy's, that are newer than mine, it's a machine, and needs to be maintained, these cars don't have lifetime warranty's and niether do we, I have sold cars for 23 years 13 with Honda, and this by far has been the best car I have owned, out of all my Honda's, Dealer Fee in Florida at my store is 699 just for doing buisness, thats a third of my trans replacement almost, so this is the question, I unlike all you haters, love the TL and see the value in fixing the problem, then again I got 258,880 out of the original trans because it was never beat, and it was mostly highway driven, I will be getting a good deal because I work for Honda, but I will insist on the new upgraded PCM because I can see that without that updated, you will go thru multiple transmissions, I will be happy to get 150k out of the replacement if I do. Good Luck to all of you !
Well it's been a while and the new trans is performing perfect, and then I started feeling all the other flaws, first front wheel bearings along with doing the struts, and new tires, sway bar bushings, serpentine belt, a/c belt, the rear trans eng mount, the front right mount, and tie rod end link pins, you know that car feels just like I'm launching a brand new TL from 02'reguardless of the costs of maintaining this car, it sure helps me sell plenty of Hondas and Acuras, and it just turned 273,496 and not a dummy light on anywhere, and whoever the person who said I am nuts, You are just a broke bitch with no money to keep your car in tip top shape, and a big whiner.....
