I've been in Hartford for a year and I have noticed that, for a city its size, Hartford supports a lot of nice restaurants in the greater downtown area.

Some posters here are correct...Joe Black's failed because its service was poor and its menu barely competitive. There are several other alternatives within a short walk that have much better service and food (Feng, Dish, Morton's, TK, Max's). The failure probably had nothing to do with location, crime, etc.

people are funny on here.
So many resturants have opened and are doing fine. This one failed. this has nothing to do with the 5 pillars or whatever Roland called it. People are so stuck in the past and they seem to be proud of their ignorance.
There should be some kind of rule. people who do not come downtown have no right to comment on this issue or on crime or anything for that matter. I walk Pratt 2x per day at least and this place failed as a business, Hartford did not fail the resturant.
Crime?! f-ing idiots! crime on Pratt Street are you people serious? I could drop my wallet on Pratt and its more likely to have someone return it to me than to loose it. Voilent crime? maybe a rare bar fight at 2 AM

It's not even as cool as New Haven, but it aint half bad.
New Haven, cool? It's full of hipsters (a false cool in my opinion) and people stuck in 1985. I find New Haven interesting but it's not cooler than Hartford, it's just on a different wavelength. Hartford is much more stylish than New Haven, it's not even debatable.

Also, the people in the sticks will continue to berate the cities. A person in a city can live spending much less on housing and cars and have much more to spend on dining and clothes. It's all relative. I find a suburban existence to be too bland for my taste.

Providence didn't tear down most of its historic buildings, that's the key difference. Hartford had more money and sadly, did not protect it's history and tore down almost everything for modernist bland skyscrapers and parking lots. Providence gained the advantage when they were poorer during that horrific shortsighted era in America.

Where would you prefer to dine out: Downtown Hartford or The Suburbs?

What an moronic poll - one location versus 150 other locations.(There are 169 communities in CT, most are not cities.)

Go town again town, county against county, but one city against every suburban town. That's hardly a fair fight.

I was sorry to hear about Joe Black's. The bar was beautiful. I hope that someone can get a decent rent from the owner and open a new restaurant. Anyone have a guess what the monthly rent there might be? Maybe 25K?

I wanted to like Joe Black's. I expected the magic of the old bank to be an integral part of the new place but when I went in and all I was that little part in front and the main dining room towards the side, I was disappointed. I would've loved to have seen that entire space be used. It is awesome.
Alas, in the end what did Joe Black's in was the quality of the food and service.

There is an Irish pub serving blah Irish pub food in just about every town in the area. Why would one bother to go downtown for that? I am happy to go there for Feng or Max, delighted by the terrific lunch menu at On20 in the old Polytechnic Club, and will happily go elsewhere in town for Firebox or some of the ethnic restaurants, but this place wouldn't have merited a second look.

The only people who waste that much money for lunch have government jobs or their up to their ass in 25% credit card payments. Most people who have earned their own money don't spend it that way

Food was terrible. Service not so great. Plenty of other places in the neighborhood that are better and still around: CitySteam, Koji, Feng, Vaughan's, The Russell.

It was the service and quality of food that did Joe Black's in, not the prices or myth perpetuated by ignorate suburbanites that Hartford is dangerous. Relative to other cities Hartford's crime problem is minimal. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get out and visit other cities. For instance can you walk around Georgetown or Adams Morgan, or for that matter outside any metro stop in DC without being agressively panhandled?(uh no). But yet I have worked in Hartford for over 3 years, run its streets at lunch, parked in its gargages, and yet have never been panhandled, intimidated or mugged.

Did you have any problems with "Hartford" when you visited there often?, I think not, because you were in the "Green Zone", the only part of Hartford that has rigorous police presence. It was a fine establishment only ruined by the likes of you and your skewed perceptions fostered by this Newspaper "The Hartford Courant"

Fortunately, Joe Black's only hosted one wedding a day, so hopefully, we won't all be treading over each other in trying to arrange our new sites. That being said, if you wanted to stay downtown, I came up with alternatives that I can share (in no particular order):

- Marriott Downtown (has been amazingly helpful and accommodating)
- The G Fox ballroom (I think it is called 960 Main or something)
- The Bushnell
- Goodwin (George is an amazing host over there, we just decided on Joe Black's for other reasons)
- Wadsworth Atheneum (but you need $1 Million insurance to use the space and you have to pay for security)
- Hilton Hartford
- The Old State House (we are having our ceremony there, but they have done both)

If I missed anything, please post it here.
