Agree, caveman, very interesting study. On an open forum, though, there are reasons to challenge deniers:
1. There are always lurkers, some of whom will have open minds. They may appreciate solid reasoning & links.
2. Climate is such a planetary emergency that we may have to force some deniers into action. If we wait for current deniers to die off & be replaced by children who've been exposed to climate science from a young age, it may be too late. By then we may have already passed tipping points.
We may have already guaranteed partial collapse of ice sheets & corresponding sea level rise of 12-15 meters or more. The droughts may collapse agriculture long before that happens.
Oh, I still believe in putting the information out there, just in case there are any fence-sitters. There are always those who have just become aware that something is not right with the weather or the climate, and are looking for answers.

And some deniers will gradually convert to green energy because of the economics, even if they don't change their mindset. The appeal of free or cheap electricity or hot water is pretty much universal.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Royal Dutch Shell will not drill for oil in Alaska's Arctic seas this year, the company said Wednesday in a widely expected decision that follows a series of high-profile setbacks in 2012.

Both critics and supporters of Shell's controversial Arctic offshore foray welcomed its decision to give up on drilling there for 2013 while the company tries to get its drill ships ready and answers to U.S. investigators.

Michael LeVine, senior Pacific counsel for environmental group Oceana in Juneau, Alaska, said Shell and the government agencies regulating the company faced a "crisis of confidence."

"The decisions to allow Shell to operate in the Arctic Ocean clearly were premature," LeVine said in a statement. "The company is not prepared and has absolutely no one but itself to blame for its failures."

LONDON -- Energy companies should not drill for crude oil in Arctic waters because the environmental risks are too high, Total SA Chief Executive Officer Christophe de Margerie told the Financial Times on Wednesday.

The newspaper, which operated behind a pay wall, described de Margerie's comments as the first time a major oil company has publicly criticized offshore exploration in the Arctic.

The risk of an oil spill in such an environmentally sensitive area was simply too high, according to de Margerie.

"Oil on Greenland would be a disaster. A leak would do too much damage to the image of the company," he said.

Earlier this month, Gazprom OAO delayed the start of oil production at its Prirazlomnoye field, the first Russian Arctic offshore oil deposit to be developed, due to safety concerns.

(Reuters)- BP Plc took chances drilling its doomed Macondo well long before it ruptured in 2010, a well design and pressure expert said on Wednesday in the second day of testimony in the civil trial over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Alan Huffman, chief technology officer for Fusion Petroleum Technologies Inc, said BP forged ahead with drilling the well in 2009 outside the margin considered safe in the industry and by regulators.

He said there was a "kick" in the well during one of many intervals in drilling, which indicates pressure was unstable and there could be a rupture or other problem. Rather than stop drilling, the work forged ahead with another interval.

"It is truly egregious to drill that extra 100 feet knowing you could lose the well in the process," Huffman testified.

He said the well was "dangerous and fragile" and "they should not have drilled ahead at all."

BP's legal team had yet to cross-examine Huffman, who testified on behalf of the U.S. Justice Department, Gulf states affected by the spill, and plaintiffs suing BP and its partners.

In this first of the trial's three phases, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier will seek to allocate blame between well owner BP, driller Transocean Ltd, cement services provider Halliburton Co and others, unless a settlement cuts the trial short.

The April 2010 blowout caused an explosion that killed 11 men and sent more than 4 million barrels of crude spewing into the Gulf.

UXBRIDGE, Canada, Feb 27 2013 (IPS)- Killer heat waves, floods and storms are increasingly caused by climate change, new research reveals.

Scientists in Germany say they have found how greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels are helping to trap the jet stream, resulting in extraordinary weather such as the 2010 Pakistan flood and the 2011 heat wave in the United States.

Human-driven climate change repeatedly disturbs the flow of atmospheric waves around the globe’s Northern hemisphere, said lead author Vladimir Petoukhov of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany.

Giant atmospheric waves called Rossby waves are meanders in the strong, high-altitude winds known as jet streams and have a major influence on weather. These wave movements are caused by the difference in temperatures between the cold air from the Arctic and hot air from the tropics.

When the waves shift north, they suck warm air from the tropics to Europe, Russia, or the U.S., and when they swing down, they do the same thing with cold air from the Arctic, said Petoukhov.

“During several recent extreme weather events, these planetary waves almost freeze in their tracks for weeks,” he said.“So instead of bringing in cool air after having brought warm air in before, the heat just stays.”

This unnatural pattern is due to human heating of the climate through emissions of greenhouse gases that result from burning fossil fuels, according to the study published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

However, this heating of the atmosphere is wildly uneven. The Arctic is warming two to three times faster than the global temperature rise of 0.8C and that affects the Rossby waves and is slowing the jet stream.

sounds hokey, doesn't it? Saving the planet.

Course it's an entirely selfish enterprise; I want to save the planet for me, should I live that long, and for my children and grandchildren. Of course I want them to have a better life than I have had. But I fear we are failing them.

The real "debate" now is about how bad it will be, and in spite of my most forced optimism, I am very afraid that we have fugged up.

If we really would be human, we would selfishly save this world, in good condition, for our children....

Oil companies are normally premature. If the environment is hurt, while the oil cans make money, it is considered good company policy..... specially if further policies to buy politicians & silence the talk about about biosphere changes are successful.

For a city that the mayor says is to stupid to have big sodas and salt and smokes and wipe your own azzes, you sure don't know shithit. Your mayor says you are dumb as a turd on the bottom of the ocean, a dinkle-berry on a dogs butt. You must be, you keep voting for him. And you think you know something about global-warming? What a F-ing joke. You deserve the high azz taxes on smokes and everything else. YOU FUNNY, YOU STUPID.

Fear mongering our children to the greenhouse gas ovens of the exaggerated climate crisis just to make sure they stay environmentally aware and hopefully turn the lights out more often is what
NEOCONS do not progressive planet lovers.

*Occupywallstreet does not even mention CO2 in its list of demands because of the bank-funded carbon trading stock markets ruled by corporations and trustworthy politicians

*Canada killed Y2Kyoto with a freely elected climate change denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming (a comet hit).

Bush gets the last laugh however as he chuckles at our 27 years of needless CO2 panic and our CO2 death threats to our own children. Was climate change our Iraq War or just our Reefer Madness?

Not even my car that I just switched to 17 inch tires would have been saved. & my little 25 year old Ford Festiva would have been toast...... soggy toast.
A lot of it has to do with the direction of the wind. I've lived here 25 years and all that is bullshit. Most of Norfolk is built on filled in swamp. A lot of it is below sea level. If there is any reason why it floods more is because more people have built where flooding occurs like the dumbasses they are. The other reason is they've filled in all the low lying area so the water has nowhere to go.

Science only agrees climate change is real, but not a real crisis. Deny that!
Show us one single IPCC warning of climate crisis that says it "WILL" happen or is "imminent", not just "might be" and "could be" a climate crisis. If it were a crisis they would have said so by now after 27 years of research so how close to unstoppable warming will science take us before they confirm it will actually be a coming climate crisis, not just maybe a crisis. Help my planet could be on fire maybe?
Science says comet hits are imminent but not climate change. Science didn't lie YOU fear mongering believers did. So the only thing you believers have to worry about is your grandkids asking why grandpa bullied the kids with CO2 death threats.

Ice-breaking planned for Lake Erie, Maumee Bay
DETROIT (AP)— The U.S. Coast Guard in Detroit is warning that ice on western Lake Erie and the Maumee Bay Channel should be considered unsafe Monday during ice-breaking operations.

A Coast Guard cutter will be in the area for most of Monday while escorting a tugboat and a barge down the Detroit River to Toledo, Ohio. Everyone is advised to stay clear of the area.

Memorize these definitions:

Climate variability

Climate variability refers to variations in the mean state and other statistics (such as standard deviations, the occurrence of extremes, etc.) of
the climate at all spatial and temporal scales beyond that of individual weather events.

Variability may be due to natural internal processes within the climate system (internal variability), or to variations in natural or anthropogenic external forcing (external variability). See also Climate change.

Climate change

A change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g., by using statistical tests) by changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. Climate change may be due to natural internal processes or external forcings, or to persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or in land use.1 See also Climate variability and Detection and attribution.

Detection and attribution

Climate varies continually on all time scales. Detection of climate change is the process of demonstrating that climate has changed in some defined statistical sense, without providing a reason for that change. Attribution of causes of climate change is the process of establishing the most likely causes for the detected change with some defined level of confidence.
