Mercer County School system is in the process of cutting teaching positions instead of administrators or support staff. And we wonder why are scores are so low.

they need to start at the top and cut. also they need to put krystal bentley in as pric. and let stuck up don't know what they are doing jennifer meadows go. krystal is way much more a pric. than meadows will ever be. the test scores don't lie. but start at the top and make cuts. there are some good teachers and aides that do care about the students.

Why does a county this size need to pay a superintendant nearly $200,000/year? Why is our education system based on securing funding instead of teaching our kids skills needed to survive in this world. I have seen kids graduate that cannot communicate an idea on paper because they cannot spell or write well enough to even read. The tests that they take, based on California designed tests get the money for the school, so more time is spent teaching the test, and less on making sure they understand and are able to make it.

So yeah, start at the top and cut his pay, he hasn't improved education here in MC. All they have for the money is a new building, but one that is empty of learning.

Our state is going broke, and our education is failing. Our teachers need to be turned loose and let them teach what they see needs to be taught. Get the union out of it. Work out a better pension that alleviates a lot of stress on our budgets. Get a medical package for them that takes care of their families, but does not break our treasury to maintain. We have to do everything we can to teach our young, they are going to be taking care of us in the future, and I'd like to see them be able to do it.

I hear that some really good teachers are being cut! Some with several years experience.

Teachers cannot teach like they use to due to all the freaking paper work they have to do.
If a child in required an aide that aide has to work with as many as four Special Needs children and the children are on different levels of learning. They do not want it said that a student with Special Needs has a one on one aide. It does happen in some cases. It all is about who you know and not what you know. If some parents only knew what goes on with their handicap child all hell would break loose. No child deserves to have to sit in a rifton child for six hours out of the day.I'm speaking of a child that can walk with an aide. If some serious changes don't soon take place with all that is going on in our school system your right mustang, the children are not going to make it in this world. It's a shame and a disgrace that we have let sports take over our education.

They to cut the b*tch that works in the front office at MCES! Sharon Sawyer, everytime I go in there she is always on her cell phone and doesn't ask what you need! I think they should start the cuts by cutting ppl that aren't doing their job! Instead of some of the best teachers they have up there!

Why not close one of the campus' and save us hard working tax payers alot of money!! We have the old high school that has 200 some odd children in it and it used to house 7th - 12th. Come on people of Mercer County, voice your opion and save our childrens education by keeping our teachers and the employees that keep our children safe from the buses up to the teachers. Isnt safety our 1st concern and the education of the children. Stop thinking of cutting jobs and save thousands in fuel, elec, water, up keep and let the Lexington Street campus go.

The school system in Colorado is setting a precedence for a teachers score card. All teachers should be held responsible for their students achievements or go. When this country settled for the "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" act, we lowered our standards and it is starting to rear its ugly head. Illiterate young adults that are being turned loose into the work force, without being able to read or write. Everyone is right, its about the funding and money put into these school systems,so the top few can live very well and the hell with the childrens education. It is just a means for paying their mortgage and not about furthering this countries future.

Teachers are the heartbeat of all schools. Teachers should be the last people to be eliminated. Many school systems have bloated central office staffs. Many school systems over emphaise sports and create jobs like "deans" so that coaches don't have to teach. Some school systems have artifical football turf and indoor practice facilities. Many school systems have layers of unnecessary administrators in each of their schools. If teachers are being eliminated and any of the above are happening at Mercer County, a trip to the school board with a documented statement would be in order.

Hoot Owl,
You dont have a clue, where have you been for the past 3yrs since we have had new Board Members elected. They have cut the Central Office Staff and have cut back on positions. You need to go to a Site Based mtg at the school building. The Board approes the Budget, the SBDM approves the position for each school. The SBDM also hires the Principal and teachers. Go Hoot up another tree.

No clue? Really? So the school board has cut the central office, but have they cut it enough? The point is what to cut. Should it be teachers or should it be adminstrators. Those who are serious should look carefully into such things as expensive indoor practice facilities for athletics and placing coaches into non teaching positions such as "dean." Also there is the double dipping that has gone on at Mercer County for several years. The school baord should be praised for FINALLY deciding to sell the farm that the school district did not need in the first place. If this school system can afford such things as non teaching coaches, indoor practice facilities, without laying off teachers let them do it, but ALWAYS teaching should be the chief function of schools..........and I'll hoot up what trees I choose.

I totally agree about selling the baby farm, thanks to Bruce Johnson and the previous Board for paying to much for something the school didn't need. Same as the athletic facility, Bruce Johnson was behind that too. Hoot....As far as Central Office... go ask Dennis Davis or a Board member about how much has alreacy been cut. The majority of the folks ie: Instruction Div, Speacial Needs, work in the school buildings. Sam I Am... Go Fly Up a Tree

I agree that we should be held accountable for our student's performance, however, this isn't really very easy to do in our current system. Many times, a student enters my classroom without the ability to think. I require my students to think and solve problems, I give them situations and expect them to be able to apply reason and logic to figure out the answer. This requires critical thinking, however, students have been so conditioned to simply read out of a book, memorize the bold word and fill it in a blank on the test on Friday, that they can't think. By the time students get to me (their junior and senior years in a high tech career education program), I have to TEACH THEM TO THINK ON THEIR OWN instead of scanning an article or copying and pasting from Wikipedia.

Respondents in this thread who have said that the whole system needs to be reorganized are right, because our current system rewards the students who can memorize, and aren't able to THINK. And why is this the case? Because that's how schools are held accountable. Schools are graded based on standardized test scores, where students are required to choose ABC or D, instead of actually thinking. And why? Because it's easier than making students perform, build, construct, reason and solve.

And isn't this what we do in every day life? How many jobs do you know of where an employer is looking for someone with the ability to memorize facts to be regurgitated (sp?) later or fill in blanks? Not many that I know of. Any job that only requires a basic repetitive, non-thinking employee is probably a job that either has been, or will eventually be, taken over by a robot.

Please educate yourself on the facts before posting comments about any subject. The superintendant does not make 200,000. All school salary is a matter of public record printed in the paper and posted online. The current salary is a cut form the previous. If you are interested in making changes, attend a SBDM or school board meeting, join one of several committees that are begging for community involvement. Be part of the solution not part of the problem.

You have your wish.. The School Board voted 4 to 1 on Thursday to close the Lexington St Campus, savings a few hundred thousand dollars that can be used for the kids education.. All we need know is a Supt that will turn up the flame on the principals and start cutting teachers that can't teach.
