I am still upset that Mercer beat Boyle last Friday and what bothers me most about the Bahamas trip and the financial situation at school is because I got short changed on my education. That is why I can't get it through my head that the school system is not spending any money on this trip and I have to keep saying they are anyways because then I wouldn't have anything to complain about.

I just saw a news report about a group that are pushing more taxes for education. They are even pushing expanded gambling in the state of Kentucky. They claim that some schools are on the verge of going bankrupt. We hear often that Mercer Schools are hurting for money. Yet our coaches don't teach and the girl's and boy's basketball games are going to the Bahamas and the football team spent a week as an out of state football camp. This school system has his priority all wrong. We don't need an expensive sports building with it's cost. But what about the state tests that evaluate how well our kids are doing scholastically? Needs Improvement is what we got. Lower grading scale is what we got and parents who think that an A really is an A. Instead of a vacation in a foreign land, we need to adjust the goals of the Mercer School System.
I'm soooo sorry you can get over Mercer Co Football you are very confused, Mercer Co doesn't have a problem with finances out of country trips are being paid by boosters and Boyle Co continues to go into other counties pulling kids into the Boyle system.

I don't care who wins a simple high school ball game. I recognize that some good can come from sports, but to get all hot and bothered over beating another high school is the pits.

Many of us have been short changed by our educational systems. I don't know about Mercer County. It appears that you are saying that the school will pay for trips out of the country for kids. Others say that the expense will be provided by the parents. If that is true, I would say good for the parents. Plane fare, housing, food and entertainment will cost a pretty penny. Does seem to be a lot of money for a short time event. But if parents can shell out the money, what not. One thing I wonder about. What if a kid's parents cannot afford it. Who pays then?

How are these parents and booster people raising these thousands of dollars. Are the selling things? Are people being begged to donate? I have heard of a school in Lexington that had each kid have to go out and get a person to sponsor them?

Does anybody have any idea what all of this will cost?

They have been selling things and raising money for sometime. Unless you are having to pay for any of it out of your pocket why do u care what the cost is.

According to the paper the trip to the Bahamas will be the first week in December. School is in session during that time. The school system would need to send coaches and teachers to supervise the members of the boys and girls basketball teams and now I hear a whole bunch of cheerleaders and their sponsors.

According to what I read on here boosters are making up money. It will cost the school nothing according to what is written on here. That's air fare, foot, transportation to the hotel and where they play, hotel, expensive. That's a lot of money. Beside that.
Would the school be required to buy insurance? Assuming that the teachers and coaches have important jobs back at school, whom will pay for the substitutes? Will school buses take the kids and all the adults to the airport? Who pays for the drivers? There will be more expenses.

No, nothing is free. I am glad that these kids are going. But the school should be honest. This trip will cost the Mercer County school system.

I have not heard anything about Cheerleaders going. According to post on here the Coaches have cushion jobs and don't teach, so if that's the case I guess you don't need substitutes? If you do then yea the school will pay for those for 3 days. The money the Booster club is raising pays for airfare, hotel, food, and transportation to the hotel. If you have a kid that plays any sports and you go to any Booster meetings then you already know that the Boosters have to raise money and pay the school for the bus drivers to and from games anyways. So I would guess they are paying them for this? Insurance I'm not sure about? I wouldn't see why they would be required to buy anymore than what they normally do? Just my thoughts.

School should be for learning and not playing. My kid does not a book. There some but they have to leave them at school and their is not enough for each kid.

If the school can send both basketball teams to a foreign country surely they can buy books.

Just go go go! And enjoy the trip. Maybe these whiny ass parents will s.t.f.u.! IF their children want to be involved in these type things, they CAN be. It seems SOME people ALWAYS got to have something to complain about or make a mountain out of a molehill or stick their nose where it DONT belong. Maybe we ought to be happy for these kids. Most of them have probably never been out of the states before or flown in a plane. Some will be seeing the ocean for the first time. Geez! Can you just shut up????and maybe grow up a little?

you say your kid DONT have a book?? Could you elaborate on that? BTW, soon books will be obsolete there and only be using computers. So, don't worry, be happy.

Your ignorance abounds. My problem with taking a bunch of basketball players out of the country is that the trip illustrates the altitude of the school system toward education. The superintendent is a sports first man. I wish that he was an education first man. We elect a school board. They turn down this silly trip. Coaches and a few parents bellyache and mouth off at a school board meeting and they flop.

Books? Books and education go hand in hand. The school system cannot buy enough text books for our kids. The state is cutting back on funds. Either we will have to pay more local taxes or things will have to be cut at the schools. I am willing to pay the price if the emphasis is on education. Raise taxes and I'll not say a word, unless we keep giving coaches soft jobs, we keep sending the entire football team to an out of state camp, and if we continue to own and fund a so called sports complex.

Next week Mercer County kids will be in school. A few will be in a sunny climate having flown out of the country to play games that they could have played at home. You lucky ones, have fun at the beach. Adults do your job and keep the kids safe.

You are right, it will cost the school and in turn the tax payers. The boosters might be paying the coaches' subs, but I bet not everyone else's. There are several others going, including spouses & parents who work in the district.

The boosters will have to cover the subs. The teachers will get the same paychecks as normal just like they are in school since it is a school trip and they are still supervising students.

Oh, and by the way, teachers get paid 10 sick days, 2 personal days, and up to 3 emergency days annually on top of only having to work 51% of the days in a year.

Teachers will not get paid to supervise on this trip. If a school employee goes, it will be in a fan/parent capacity & they will have to use their 2 personal days & take one day without pay.

Yes, teachers will get paid and not have to take their personal days for it. I am a teacher and have three teaching degrees. I have been on trips like this numerous times. Ask any teacher. This a school trip.
