It's that time of year again. Today the Mercer County Sheriff's Department mailed out the property tax bills to all landowners in Mercer County. Included in this tax bill is a portion that goes to maintain the Mercer County Public Library. A place where citizens can borrow books, movies, use computers, attend seminars, use meeting rooms, and expand on their children's education.

This of course infuriates many in Mercer County, whose motto can be summed up by Pink Floyd: "We don't need no education." They will then vent in the only place they know, Topix.

While of course the best action would be to attend the library board meetings and en masse bring their concerns, this simply requires too much effort.

So for about the next week, be prepared to suffer through people who care barely read and write explaining why we don't need a library. It will slowly dissipate as the bills are paid, and attention turns towards tasty candy at Halloween time!

So, you are going to ignore the Circuit Court ruling in Northern Kentucky striking down those library taxes. Mercer County's tax is in the same boat. Granted, the case is under appeal, but a ruling was made.

I'd hope that the legislature would chime in and fix whatever statute is offending.

Brw, the library lower their tax rates this year...

I'm aware of that. Just pointing out that if this ruling stands after appeal, the tax will be substantially lower.

Dear One True Digger:

If you truly think in that small and narrow mind of yours that Kentuckians are uneducated, why don't you step up and get up from behind from that computer screen of yours and man up and show us how a "real man" from Maryland does it? Don't be scared, after all us from Kentucky are just "simple folk" just looking to be educated by someone as educated as yourself, and in turn we got something for you.

You all play right into his game by answering him or a comment . Now , he does talk poorly about the local school system which leads me to believe that Bart did attend MCS at a time . Not Maryland .

It is true that the public library in Mercer County collects and spends more property tax than the Mercer County government collects.

Some may think that having a library collect more property tax that the county Judge is over the top. Others love the block long library.

I say use the library. They are not going to stop collecting your money.

I suppose that loving or hating the library and it's tax base depends on whether you use it.

Those who use it love it are glad to pay the taxes. Those who don't look at the enormous size and expense and ask why?

It reminds people of the huge and expensive Justice Center. Once the court house housed the school Superintendent's office, the country clerk, the county judge as well as court related space. Now every former tenant has his own space and expense. Government never stops spending money that it did not earn.

But that is the American way. Enjoy the new digs if you love them, and continue paying for them even if you don't.
