How many Atheists are there in Harrodsburg? I myself am one, but have a heavily Christian family so I haven't "come out of the closet" about it yet. Anyone else in the 'burg an Atheist?

I wish I could tell my parents. They're crazily into their fundamentalist Christian beliefs. I may let my dad know sometime, don't think he'd be near as mad as my mom will.

I don't consider myself an atheist but don't agree with organized religion. I think it is just a way to use fear to keep people in line. Christians especially like to use it to insight hatred for others, etc. My family knows how I feel & do not like it or accept it but I don't care. I am grown & don't need them to tell me how to think. I still believe in something but my God is not mean or vengeful like I was taught by the Baptist church.

I've been told that. I honestly don't want prayers. You can pray for me all that you want, but it's not going anywhere.
If you really want to help me, provide a shred of evidence that there is a god(or gods). The way I see it, believing in god is a logical fallacy as believing in god is to say "there is no evidence, so I think I'll just make something up." I was very religious at once, I can quote the majority of the bible and many major Christian authors such as Josh McDowell or C.S. Lewis and I've even met McDowell and seen him speak many times. My religious upbringing however is what lead me to question my beliefs because of the way my parents, teachers, even clergy acted in the name of this all-loving "prince of peace."

So new question for those who have told your friends and family. How'd you do it?
I'm starting to seriously think about it, just not sure how to go about it.

Religion causes wars. Who cares what people believe? Does it affect anybody else?

Please dont everyone be a disbeliever in the Lord. That is the one sin you cannot be forgiven for. Religion dosen't cause wars, it is caused by the lost souls of this world. I was once caught up in the work of Satan. I was addicted to prostitutes and alcohol so badly I went thru the detox unit at St. Joseph Hospital, and spent three days in the ICU unit there. I prayed several times for the lord to pull me through it. At my darkest moment he did. He knew exactly what I needed and he saved my life that horrible night. You know, I used to feel so useless. I needed that bottle so badly it was the only life I had. I laughed when hearing kids brag they could drink each other under the table. Brother you dont want to ever be there. You dont ever want to not have Jesus beside you. By trusting in the lord and giving yourself to him there will be so much fullfilment (sorry, dont know how to spell it!) come into your life. It happened to me, and I don't see how many more people could have been more sinful than I. Come on and give the Lord a try. I promise you wont be sorry. Close your eyes and have a good old heart to heart talk with God. No matter your troubles, you will find comfort with him.

God teaches us to love each other as we do ourselves. I do practice what I preach and If I have a fish I will gladly share it with you. If I dont have a fish, we will look for one together. And if we still dont find that fish, the Lord will provide whatever he feels we need. No matter what, you have to have faith in Jesus Christ. Talk to him with your heart and he will show you. Dont be afraid or ashamed, it's just between you and him. You won't regret it, I promise.

I've given your lord a try. It didn't work for me.
I believed in Jesus once, but I simply can't anymore. He wasn't there, he never was. Also, most wars are caused by religion, not lost souls.
The crusades are a perfect example, as is the current war in Afghanistan and the fighting in Iraq. Furthermore, I tried many times to have faith in the "lord", asked "him" to show "himself" and yet there was nothing. Not one shred of being. Quite honestly, I have just as much reason to believe in the Judeo-Christian god as I do to believe in Thor, Zeus or Ganesh.

I do applaud you for that, many "Christians" will not go as far as to even try to imitate Christ. As Ghandi put it, "I like your Christ, not your Christians" however I believe one can be provided with just as much without having to believe in any higher power.

I believe that God,and Jesus Christ, the son of God lives in the heart of each and everyone of us. It is up to us if we choose to let Christs love for us flourish or to wither there. I do not "pray" for others whom can help themselves. I feel that we all have to make our own Covenant with Christ. I cant do that for you or anyone else, only myself. I do pray for those who cant help themselves, as I myself came from that situation.I am very thankful for the salvation I have been given and try to return it with love for others the best I can. I dont condemn you because of your beliefs as I feel it is Satan putting this in your heart. Satan is pure sin, and sin will destroy your life, both physically and spiritually. Please don't let this happen to you. You deserve so much better. Weather you believe it or not, you are a child of God and as you well know, denial of God is unforgivable. Well, have a good evening my friend! Im sleepy got to hit the sack! Take care, maybe we can talk again sometime.

I have struggled with this issue for years. What I have finally realized is that atheism makes no more sense than any other religion, as there is no proof to substantiate it either. Because of this I consider myself Agnostic. I will be happy to change my mind should hardcore evidence arise either way, but it almost certainly will not. The truth is that there are more important things to worry about, like helping your fellow man. When I came across the concept of Agnostic Humanism I literally yelled "YES!". I finally found a "label" for what made I believed.

A humanist agnostic believes he/she doesn't know whether there is or is not a God, but that it shouldn't matter in any case. What matters is that one's life should be dictated by common human principles and reasoning, and that one's actions should be directed toward the betterment of mankind, independent of any religion.

Two quotes that I hold dearly:

"I like your Christ; I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" -Ghandi

"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction" -Pascal
