Free School lunches

I have no problem with this, goodness knows that most of the kids in Harrodsburg have p1ss poor parents to begin with & they won't be fed at home. Beats most of the asanine federal programs out there, although all of the children in my family have apparently been packing their lunches since the "Mooch" has pushed these new guidelines in, so I can throw that in there, they tell me the food isn't edible. I should state that none of my relatives attend any Mercer Co. schools so I don't know how good or bad it is there.

Why are their free lunches now. When I went to school we didn't have any free lunches. The income was so low that we didn't have but one pair of shoes & one pair of clothes. No water in the house,no car, heated with coal & no food

First of all I agree with Joan, on the first part anyway, it IS good that the schools provide these meals for the children, regardless of their financial status. My kids don't go to Mercer but several of my friends who have children there are FINE PARENTS. I'm just assuming here when I say this, after the 40 % of the required children (which isn't a big stretch to believe 40% of kids are in the category that NEED free lunch) have filled out the forms the other children probably don't even know the next step in the process. If I'm right in saying 40% would definitely qualify for free lunch , and that's ALL that is needed for everyone to get it, then the other children's parents probably don't have to fill out the forms. So no, IMO, this isn't teaching our children that it's ok to defraud anyone. Do u know if ALL children are required to return the forms back to school ? Most public schools (mine are in private) send the forms home and only the ones that need the assistance fill out and return the forms. After asking a friend who's children attend Mercer, she said that's how it's done there as well. Do u think it's a stretch that 40% of KY kids actually qualify for the assistance ?? I think it's absolutely feasible, given the financial situation these days, that MORE THAN 40% that receive it definitely need it.

Go to #ThanksMichelle on twitter, it's hilarious pics of the "healthy lunches" championed by the President's wife. It's stomach churning, however if the kids need it it's there, the problem is the waste that's going on with the new guidelines, if the kids aren't eating it then what's the point?

I support free lunch for kids whose parents cannot afford to feed them. I am glad that poor kids get to eat two of their three meals free year around. When you couple that with food stamps, public housing and welfare there should be no hungry children. What I wonder is this: Fayette County has more than 27 schools. Taxes are paid by all property owning Fayette County people. What is fair about some tax payers who can afford to buy lunch and breakfast for their kids being able to avoid paying when parents whose kids attend other schools and pay equal taxes do have to pay for their kids to eat. I would say that this total free lunch should be school system wide.
Well, I have to agree with u. I must've misread ur initial commment. I thought u said ALL Fayette schools had the required 40%. Do u think all the schools meet the quota of 40%? This still doesn't seem much of a stretch to me. It is a great thing ,for the kids who need it, to receive the 2 of 3 meals , but for the schools that do not apply, they should receive the benefit if other schools in Fayette do as well.

<quoted text> You can make $41,350 and if you have two kids they can eat free at schools. Lord have mercy. I have never had that kind of money in my life and I have always worked hard. My kids are gone now, but I reckon I could have sure used free lunches when they was in school. I applied but I never got it done. Maybe it is easier now. Looks like Obama wants as many getting hand out as he can. Them that gets free stuff usually votes democratic. I finally paid off our house and I pay school taxes as well other taxes like a tax to the library. I reckon I will have to pay on until I die. Some day Mercer County will get this free lunch deal and moms and dads will get back most of their school taxes in free lunch and even them what makes more than $41,350 will get it. Won't help me and according to this $41,350 number I am a poor man.
If you're over 65 you can apply for the Homestead exemption in KY, you can ask for an application at the Co. PVA or the Co. Clerks office. I'm not sure about the amount, but I think it's up to $34,000. of your homes valuation. That should help a little with your taxes. This benefit should really be advertised much more than it is.

What a disgrace? Someone has to pay for the food to feed the kids like taxpayers. What happen to the working people . Put your needs before your wants. The low income family can sure dress in nothing but name brand clothing but can't buy grocerys. Everyone wants a hand out. I'm to proud to bum off free services. But I have always put needs first... Lots of people needs jobs jn Harrodsburg. Young people don't want to work at all .. I pray I can teach my kids the same values I had growing up .

There is something rotten here. A family of four which brings in over $41,000 in yearly income is darn able to feed their kids. That is the first problem.......Problem two: why should a family with even more income than that get their kids fed free just because 40% of the kids in that school get to eat free.........Problem three: why should families of similar economic means be treated differently just because of where they live......... Problem four: People with pride ought to want to be responsible for their own kids. If they can afford to feed their kids, why depend on the government......Problem five: What kind of message does this send to kids?.......Problem six: Free lunch is not free. This is another tax burden the American citizen who is now feeding other people's kids even though those people could and should be feeding their own........What kind of country are we becoming?
Hey there now, those designer bags & Nikes ain't free! Neither are the iPhones, rims and grills & don't forget the 3 inch fingernails that have to get done every week! There's no cash left for food after that, you know the important stuff comes first!
