Who will hire the new basketball coach? Will it be the School based Council? Will the superintendent and/or the elected school board have a say? Will the booster club have an influence? Will the new coach also be a teacher? Or will he be given a soft, made up job like the football coach?

Hope they go outside the district and hire a good coach. Need to clean house with boys coaching because of morals. All of them cause they are all alike.

Well "Jerry". Since you're so holy and obviously know all about how corrupt the coaching staff is, please enlighten the rest of the community to how morally bankrupt the current coaching staff is. Or you could come out from behind your keyboard, be a man and address it in person.

Jerry.. Jerry. Jerry. What a Lil sh-t you are. Folks the next basketball coach will be hired by the school principal and athletic director. I'm sure the supt will have inpu, the school board won't, it's not something they can do. Whomever they hire will not meet everyone's standards. So the community will still continue to bitch and mown.

Might be a good time to try for Steve Adams at Boyle Co. Boyle made his class schedule tougher to accommodate hiring Chuck Smith. He's a graduate of the original Mercer High. He's tight with some of the board members. He's a proven winner. If I were A.D, he would be my first phone call.

Of course the Principal and AD will do the hiring but I think others will definitely have input into the decision. Jerry does make a point about morals. There have been several instances when the present coaches only used a select group of players no matter about ability. Moral definition is determining right from wrong. The money issue is another concern. Who is left with this bill for the Bahamas trip? I don't have a dog in this fight except I pay taxes and hope a great coach is hired and that they can bring Mercer back into contention in district and regional play. I went to a couple of games and no one is there. We can't afford that great gym with only about 30 people paying. Now is the time to make things right for the Titans.

maybe he is tight with Montgomery and Yeager. The only two board members that make sports the priority, and not education. The other three have the educational needs of the students first.

A Steve Adams /Michael John Johnson coaching combo would take those kids to new heights. I have seen what coaching they have been getting and they have no fundamentals. The best academic schools also have outstanding athletic programs. Highlands, Trinity, St. X, Ballard, Bowling Green, and Scott Co all come to mind as schools that get it done in class AND in sports. Sounds like a lot of parents are anti sports because their kids can't play.

So it is the Athletic Director and the principal who will do the hiring. A teacher tells me that all applications should go to the superintendent and he then sends those that he approves of to the principal. No coach will take a job unless he gets a teacher's job as well as extra pay for coaching. Who will decide if he will be a teacher or if a soft no work job will be created for him? Does he get to pick his assistants or will the Athletic Director and principal also hire them and will they be teachers?

Personally I would like to see coaches be teachers. Two of the best teachers that I had were Alvis Johnson and Gilbert Samples and both of them were coaches. If the coach is a leader and if he has good morals he can be a positive influence on the students of any school. Schools that are taking coaches out of the classroom are making two mistakes IMO. They are missing out of the positive influence of a good coach and they are creating the image that "professional high school coaches" should be paid a teacher's salary without having to teach. This is especially bad in these hard economic times.

You bring up two important points. If it is true that the last coach left owing for the Bahamas trip that could be a big problem. What is owed to who and who is going to pay? Must the booster club beg for money? Will the school board quietly pay the bill and say nothing? I still say that the school board and superintendent has some responsibility since the allowed the trip to go on in spite of the fact that they must have known that the money was not there to pay for it. The second point is the lack of attendance at high school basketball games. I went to five or six games at Mercer and a couple of games at Burgin and the bleachers were 4/5 empty. I can understand the apathy at Burgin. But why do county school systems build these huge gyms when they know that they will never fill them? One more thing that I wonder. Are Britt and his staff still on the payroll at Mercer in their "other" jobs.

that's why the schools have booster, which are the parents to fundraiser for the program. It's the boosters/ parents that are responsible for the debt. Read the new rde book that governs the clubs. The supt and the board are not on the hook for the trip. In fact, according to minutes of the board, the athletic director had a letter from the organizers of the trip releasing them of any and all liability. Remember the SBDM approved the trip, the board approved alternate transportation.

This bill was incurred by the basketball team of Mercer County High School. Mercer County is ultimately responsible for this bill. I don't care what the school board minutes say of if the SBMD approved it before the school board game it's approval. As most will recall, the board at first refused but were talked into approving it. This school board, principals, athletic directors and superintendent have questions to answer since they either knew or should have known that Britt and his booster club did not have the money to pay for the trip before they left Mercer County.
