The primary issue could not have been failed brakes.

A mechanic who has never heard of a stuck throttle? Seriously? Its got a pedal that can stick or get jammed. Its got a cable that can bind & jam. Its got a throttle plate that can stick & return spring that can break. Its got an idle air control valve that can also stick open. Give me the name of that shop so I know not to go there.

Its quite possible that there was also a brake problem, but no car is going to hit 100mph on that stretch of road without actual acceleration.

Quick and smart thinking by all involved! Thank you to the state troopers and Augusta County deputies for protecting other drivers. I'm sure this was a scary experience for everyone and am glad there were no serious injuries.

A very similar situation happened to someone I know. The throttle got stuck going up Afton Mtn on 250. The person was able to turn of the car and get it stopped. I can't believe a mechanic has never heard of this.

I listened to the recording and all I hear is two clueless kids who have no idea how to operate a motor vehicle.

Well let me say I'm glad everyone is OK. But, how about turning the key off,or putting the transmission in neutrally and applying the emergency brake? I don't get it.

if you're this stupid you shouldn't be driving...the fact that shifting the transmission (standard or auto, doesn't matter) to "neutral" negates anything going on with the acceleration is basic automobile operational knowledge...Darwin won't miss this guy again

On the tape they say they won't turn off the key b/c of traffic behind them. They also indicate that it won't go into neutral. Two clueless kids who don't know how to operate a motor vehicle. An auto tran will easily slide to neutral on the fly. A manual might require a jolt, but it will go. They are clueless.

The only thing that would keep you from being able to go to neutral would be losing the shift linkage or a weird internal transmission problem. Both of those are possible - but to suddenly have BOTH a throttle stuck open AND a problem like this at the same time (and only MAYBE a brake problem) is terribly and completely improbable.

Shift to neutral - leave the engine running to keep power to steering and brakes - steer to shoulder, apply brakes.

If for some reason the brakes were not working - downshift and apply parking brake.

Calm yes they were. But clueless as well.
